is anyone here an independent contractor for fedex ground? I have a good friend who runs 7 trucks for them and is making a good living doing it, he is encougaging me to do the same. I am looking at buying a route and truck from a couple that has been running almost 2yrs for them ( husband is haveing medical issues) I would inherit their senority, so that would include .99 per mile, safety bonus, points to purchase a dedicated route. you can fuel at the FX hubs for $1.25 gallon. the numbers look good but I would like to hear from others who run for them.

All that ,but you forgot to mention the fact that the vehicle has to be team operated, meaning that you will have to hire a co-driver that will be there with you 24/7 and pay him salary, so that 1.25pg is not helping you any.
There are plenty of carriers that you can make the same money with and pay the fuel at the regular price and be by yourself....

One thing i dont like Fedex for is that you are constantly monitored, you talk about safety bonuses and yes, there are there but if the catch you going over a posted speed limit anywhere in the country ( and they can-QUALCOMM ) you will blow it in a second, plus sharing my bunk with someone, nah, i could not do it but alot of peeps can so its up to you...and i dont know how can you inherit someones senority if you only bought their truck, truck doesnt drive itself, thats your job and you cant inherit where they left off by just driving it, YOU have to work your way up to the top, not the truck, they will start you at .90 . Think about that before you make the move, resarch it some more, dont just jump on it..youll be better off, TRUST ME !

Oh yeah but can you talk about the milage they get and the routes they run? :wink:

Friend of mine runs up to Greensboro(100 miles) constantly, he gets to go to Ohio and back in 4 days, checks average 800-900 per week as a O/Op, ALOT of night driving and late deliveries, hes home Sunday 4 sure, gets home Saturday A.M. dead tired and i havent talked to him in weeks because of it....

As a solo company driver i averaged 1200-1600 per week, something to think about :!:

5000 miles x .99 = $4950 gross pay for one week

5000 miles x .39 for 2 drivers = $1950

1950 x 21% for fica and WC = $409

fuel at 5 mpg and $1.25 per gallon = $1,250

insurance $53 per week

fedex base plate $15 per week

$52,196 net before taxes to me, the folks who have the truck for sale want $46,000 for a 2002 T2000 with 680,000 miles on it with app 100,000 miles of engine warranty left on it. I don't think I will offer them that maybe closer to 40,000 wich I plan on paying for with a refinance on my house wich I understand I need to include this payment into my cost figures.

I think that theese numbers are fairly accurate, my friend showed me his weekly settlement sheets and has helped me with the other costs associated with it, now to me this looks like a decent deal especially if I drive the truck during my slow time if I need a driver, please tell me what I am missing because I am sure there is plenty.

this is only a rough estimate,maintaince should be higher

Based on 10,000 miles a month it cost me roughly

fuel .42 cpm based on $2.40@ gal
truck .163 cpm
insurance .03 cpm
health ins .03 cpm
tolls est. .02 cpm
plates .013cpm
maint .03 cpm
taxes est. .07 cpm

total .776 cpm

yes, when they are first put into service then they can stay even if they are over 5yrs old.

You have to have benefit of the doubt whenever someone tells you something regarding certain company, I can tell you for CERTAIN that friend of mine who has 2 trucks with them doesnt do 5000 miles every week and i can also tell you that he has problems getting quality people who will run his truck, he changed about 4 different individuals in about 8 months since he leased that other vehicle to them. good thing about them is that 100% of your haul is drop and hook and avarage weight of your load is about 20,000.....and also the guy i was talking about in the first place runs ground and pulls doubles but he does it single, if you want i can maybe hook you up with him and you can ask him directly..?

I think he is talking about splitting the .39 between the 2.

I have a good buddy (and former boss) running 3 trucks with ground right now, he is happy there, making a good living for himself and his employees and has been at ground since day one.

I don't know what your looking to pay for the route and truck, but coming in with the senority is a big plus as you already know.

Not sure what hub you would be working out of, so you may want to research what type of runs they offer before you sign on. You can make more money elsewhere, but I can tell you from past experience running with ground is pretty stress free and when I was ta driver there we were always moving.

Not true, you can run local (provided the hub you sign on with isn't overloaded with local trucks)

I have yet to see a single fedex ground truck with Qualcomm. And, yes they do monitor you, you must wear their uniforms, you must keep trucks to a certian standard, no pets, no unauthorized passengers, and yes, saftey bonuses can't be counted on because there are a lot of things to get busted on (speeding, log book errors, to name a few) *but* if you don't run like a madman chances are good you'll get the bonus.

You can make it work - but you won't get rich. Also, fedex has been known to take their sweet time approving drivers, and whomever applies for you better have a squeaky clean background check and driving record

I purchased my 2001 Pete 387 for $43k with 688k miles last May. I sold it 3 months later for $47k with 720k miles and I could have sold it numerous times over at that price. I have no idea what the market is at right now for trucks, but of its anything like it was last summer I think the 46k asking price with the "job" is fair, as long as the truck is not beat up & passes a dyno.

Its some kind of a computerized system thats alot like QC or it, not 100% sure but i know that a friend of mine has blowed all of his safety bonuses for the past 2 years as they knew exacly what speed he was going getting thru certain states, he never got a citation or anything like it and he told me that for 5mph over the posted speed limit you will loose your bonus. Fedex will also fire you on the spot if any kind of misshap occured with the equipment you are driving ( trailes ) regardless of what and how big that was and regardless of your senority, they will not give you a second chance. They have gotten full of themselves recently as i have chatted with their local guys as well and they tell me that they are looking for the needle in a haystack just to find a reason to talk to u about and maybe go further as well..

Local work is available as i reported earlier in the post but for what miles and for what money?

I am not saying at all that Fedex is a bad place to work in i just think that you can make the same money elsewhere and pay regular fuel price being by yourself and working on yourown schedule...

thanks for all the help guys. I would run out of the Henderson Colorado hub don't think it will be a problem getting mileage they made a recent change, if there are no loads heading out of our hub within a certain time they will have you pull emptys to another hub and grab a load out of there.

there is no gps tracking that I know of but will ask my buddy, he has had cars follow him for awhile and he was sure they were checking his speed.

there is absolutly nothing in the trucks to monitor a driver... i know i drive one every day. they do however have an outside company out in cars that will follow you for a few miles and do a report. this is what i mean about people talking out there ass without the proper knowledge.
