How much did you pay for insurance...and is the company seem good so far?.....hmmm maybe too early to tell huh?
The thing I would have done is keep a better eye on them , they said they posted my insurance with FMCSA, but they waited a whole week to do it.
Dunno if they are fast at getting my cargo liabilty proof to brokers they will have redeemed themselves in my eyes.
Pepe,
I have not even really tried for insurance yet. I am waiting a couple of more weeks until my truck is done. So far the only quotes I have are from companies who want to have me on a "limit".
I want to have free reign of the country,...not stuck in the South East.
It is going to be difficult to find any insurance company who will insure you without at least 2 years of experience. You can't really blame them. Your chances are greatest for having an accident when first starting out. If you are involved in an accident your insurance carrier is on the hook for a huge claim. Once you get a little experience, you are less likely to be involved in an at fault claim.
I know its a risk, but I do have more miles under me than Steve (at least 50,000 anyway). I drove for Stevens back in 99-2000, and had no issues or problems. I can understand the restriction if I just got my CDL a week ago, but that is not the case.
I'm still going to try and look for an insurance provider that goes on my 8 year old CDL with no moving violations, and or even parking tickets.
If there is such an animal out there![]()
Try Western Ins.; they seemed to be going by that method believe it or not, but keep an eye on the insurance company itself they use, to make sure they post your with FMCSA
Thanks Pepe, but I checked them out already, and they don't cover Florida.
Keep a copy of your insurance cert with you to send to brokers when initially setting up, this will help to hold the load if the ins co is slow to send certificate holder copy to broker. Suzy at the ins co doesnt care if you get a load or not.Originally Posted by pepe4158
Lots of good advice here. I agree about the lack of rear loading with a step....but it's a small price to pay for the ability to pull 10' H legally IMO. Most skateboard freight in my area doesn't pay squat anyway.
Also,on the side kit......if you really needed one, you could prolly rig one for a step.
WRT your desire for a rolltite.....skip it. I'd rather retain the ability to pull wide loads.
Good luck. You've got lotsa money in reserve you should be OK.
I agree on the advice,...you guys have been a ton of help,...someday I hope I can help out as well.
As far as the step,....man I really want to run one, I have another month before I have to decide, so I'll keep my eye out for a good used trailer.
Doghouse,
The Truck Paper internet site has a couple of listings for a large number of 2000/2001, 48', 102", 21" drop, Wilson step decks. They look like Melton trade-ins. Probably around $20K
I was out in Orlando today and I saw some really nice steps and flats, funny thing though,....they were all loaded running south, and empty headed north,...gotta love Florida  .
Not to mention the driver who placed his truck so close to my bumper that all I could see were his lights!!
My little car only goes 65mph, but this guy was not even trying to pass me,...he just rode there for about 20 miles on I-4.
I like to take lessons from people like him and make sure not to do that myself.
Doghouse when I was out there on the road, alot of the other drivers would been giving the guy grief over the CB.
Give me the Sea or the Open Road
I will require more evidence before making a decisionOriginally Posted by mike3fan
I sure hope someone was seeing what I was. I was glad when I got off at the exit. I always remember the time I came up on an accident near Albany, and there was a car under the front of a truck almost to the front seats.
