Question about company plates and inspection

I will be leasing my truck on to a company who provides me with my plates and permits. How does registration and inspection work? I live in NY but I know the plates will be from a different state. Do I have to register my truck in NY too? Does it have to be inspected in NY ? :?: :idea:

Never let a company own your plates, your truck you buy the plates, that way if you quit them you'll still be able to drive your truck. :wink:

My company I leased on to plates it for free(48states)out of IL and they did not take it out of my settlements. (Some do) It is registered in their name but the title is mine, with my name on it. It is not a lease deal. I own the truck. This means I leave when I want and register it in my name and go work for somebody else if I had to. You do need a NY state HUT, Federal HVUT, MVT for NYC, IFTA. I have a NYS inspection, but not sure if I have to for sure. It's only $25 or whatever the amount is, I forgot. Most companies that lease you on will handle these permits.

If you have base plates from a company and they take it out of your settlement then you are better off getting your own pates from your own state.

The reason is if you quit the company they take their plates back even if you have completely paid for them.(its their plates)
then you have to go through the hassle of re registering your truck in your home state

Yes the plates are free. They dont deduct from my settlements. When do I pay the sales tax on the truck? Since they will register it then I am guessing they wont be paying the sales tax. I didnt pay tax when I bought it. :?:

As long as you are over 26,000 lbs gross (combined tractor & trailer) weight you are exempt from paying sales tax.

It depends on the state. My state has an exemption if you have a MC number. Georgia charges sales tax and must be paid when you title the truck. I could title my truck in either Georgia or Tennessee. Because of the sales tax, I titled it in Tennessee, because of the sales tax exemption. I would check where you register your truck to see if your state has an exemption. If not, it is usually required to pay sales tax when you register it or get the title.

As far as base plates are concerned, it is usually cheaper to get your own in your home state than through a carrier, unless they furnish them at no charge. Many carriers plate in Illinois. You will likely pay about $2,200 for base plate and permits going through your carrier. I can plate in my home state and get all my permits for less than $1,700. I think the base plates alone run about $1,400. Those costs will vary according to each state.

Most carriers will inspect your truck while at orientation before you will be allowed to sign a lease. Any problems will need to be corrected in order for the truck to pass inspection. For instance, if you have a tire that which doesn't meet the minimum tread requirement, then you will need to replace the tire before your truck will pass inspection. Some carriers have their own inspection people, others have a near by garage to do the work. Some will pay for the inspection, others may require the owner to pay. Most truck stops, such as TA can do a DOT inspection. Once you are leased to a carrier, they may allow you to have the truck inspected at a truck stop. Inspections are usually done from 3 month to 1 year, depending on the age of the truck and carrier policy.
