from the looks of it looks like just a spotted salamander. just from the pictures it really doesnt fit the characteristics of a lizard... more of a salamander with the plump body and stubby limbs

I lived in NM for awhile and it's got the size of a Gila and their colors will change-Surprised you were able to get so close to it though.

He did have short legs and this was taken after dark and was not near water. He was about 8 inches long and he curled up and hissed at me when I started messing around with him. But he was not agressive in any way.

Thanks alot for the color commentary Steve, I just happen to have been about to devour a spinach and cheese pizza. Guess it will have to wait for breakfast.

BTW, your comment was really funny! Still missing my dinner tho'

It's a Tiger Salamander. We had 5 living in our basement out on the farm, years ago when I was still in school. Harmless.

Gila Monsters are bigger, do not have the smooth skin of a salamander, and are highly venomous.

Gila's are a lot bulkier, though. And salamanders hiss, too. At least ours did.

I saw one in Cozumel Mexico out in the boonies. Not sure what it was but it was maybe 3 or 4 feet long from head to tail. I sort of cut it off checking it out and it got pissed. Ran at me, hit me with it's tail and took me right off my feet and ran away. Huge bruise on my legs. I guess that's how they fight.
