    Default LP gas generator

Does anyone know if it is illegal to carry a professionally installed LP gas genny on a class 8 truck?

I have one in my garage, and was wondering.

Yes you can, as long as the LP container is secured, and the LP container is less than 100 lbs of propane.

Thanks Rev.Vassago, it seems like an option, and I have a complete system that was to be installed on my RV, but I sold the RV, and have this unit left over.

Trucker4life, what does HC mean ?

    HC=Hazardous Cargo.

I don't think he'd carry enough LP fuel to require placarding/HAZMAT rules.
You can take the driver out of the truck but you cant take the truck out of the driver.

100 lbs is the maximum. Most LP containers are MUCH less than that.

What is the fuel consumption rate of the LP generator in question?
You can take the driver out of the truck but you cant take the truck out of the driver.

Here is the specific reg that applies - When I said 100 lbs, I should have said 100 KG.:

§392.51 Reserve fuel; Materials of trade.

Small amounts of fuel for the operation or maintenance of a commercial motor vehicle (including its auxiliary equipment) may be designated as materials of trade (see 49 CFR 171.8 ).

    (a) The aggregate gross weight of all materials of trade on a motor vehicle may not exceed 200 kg (440 pounds).

    (b) Packaging for gasoline must be made of metal or plastic and conform to requirements of 49 CFR Parts 171, 172, 173, and 178 or requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration contained in 29 CFR 1910.106.

    (c) For Packing Group II (including gasoline), Packing Group III (including aviation fuel and fuel oil), or ORM-D, the material is limited to 30 kg (66 pounds) or 30 L (8 gallons).

    (d) For diesel fuel, the capacity of the package is limited to 450 L (119 gallons).

    (e) A Division 2.1 material in a cylinder is limited to a gross weight of 100 kg (220 pounds). (A Division 2.1 material is a flammable gas, including liquefied petroleum gas, butane, propane, liquefied natural gas, and methane).

This may be a stupid question, but what's a genny? The only thing I can figure is generator (and I didn't read all the other posts carefully so if I missed it somewhere else, I apologize). An lp generator doesn't make any sense to me.

We have a gas grill but we just carry the little camp canisters- they're about 6 inches diameter by 10 inches tall- ish.

    Fuel consumption rate is:
    0.9 full load per hour
    0.6 half load per hour

Its an Onan 5500 that turns 2,400 rpm at full load.
    290 lbs

I have a complete unit set up including the control panel,.....but I don't know if I will use it, the fuel consumption is pretty high compared to a unit like the Rig Master. Its also air cooled, and I would rather have a liquid cooled unit.
I do have an LP fill station down the road from me, but it may not be as cost effective as the diesel units.

Thanks for the great info, it helped a great deal
