Look into the thermoking brand also. If they are good enough for walmart
they can't be all bad. And you can get them worked on at any T.K. dealership.
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.

How many hours have you put on it in a year?

How much longer till you feel like you have made your money back?

I'm not sure on exact hours, but I'll look at it Tuesday and see, then post it.
We'll see when I trade it in next week ( the truck ), should be a good selling point.

I would keep your eyes open for state Grant money. A few states are now giving out grant money to help offset the costs.

Also I believe that most APU's are a joke. I agree you dont need a 425 hp AC unit, however after averaging out the fuel consumption, one of our N14's isnt far behind the RigMaster that was to replace it. I am very disappointed that such a little engine doesnt get better fuel consumption than it does. If I calculaed it correctly, it saved about 18% on fuel, which would be good if it was 72% the size of an N14 or ISX, however its not, to me it should be getting much better fuel consumption that it does, and I have confirmed this with other fleets as well.

I honestly dont feel fuel savings would justify a 7-10k investment. Now add in wear and tear and maintanence on the engine, your getting somewhere.

Throw in the fact that in many states your not allowed to idle unless in extreme weather, we dont have much of a choice. Funny 32 degress in some states is legal to idle, however 33 degrees is not. Im sorry but id be a tad bit uncomfortable with 33 degree weather and no heat.

Its coming to it, I would say in the very near future...it will be an added necessity rather than an option or add on.

I say that maybe 2 or 3 years the APU will be illegal, WHY? because Delaware has already banned them, and California says a diesel is a diesel is a diesel.

The new 2007 engines burn cleaner than the APU's they sell right now, SO in Californias eyes the APU is a polluter, and you watch them ban it, and then the other states will do the same, besides, whats the difference between the 2, ever park next to a truck with an APU running? Doesn't smell real good.

Let me ask you all a question, lets say you got your APU on and your sleeping, and a cop wakes you up and tells you "there is NO IDLING here" and you tell him " its my APU" and he says " I don't care what it is, there is NO IDLING here", "that means NO engines running,..... now turn it off or I'll write you up"

    There goes an $8000.00 investment.

You won't be seeing one on my truck anytime soon.

I have the TK and it was a nightmare at first because of the install was done as poorly as it could be.It is a good unit if it is put on right and as far as the price goes ,shop around.Dunn,NC or Fargo,ND are two of the best install and price dealers you will find.
Before you buy walk by a Rigmaster and the Carrier unit and listen to them scream,it will talk you right out of it if you intend on sleeping in your truck.I know I have moved my parking spot on a lot more than one occaission when one of those rattle traps was next to me.Those engines are turning at well over 3,000 rpm's constantly while the TK unit spins about half the rev's and only runs when it's called for.It is simple math to me if it spins less than half the time of the others it should last more than twice as long.
If you think it is alright to haul for fuel money
you are part of the problem sell your truck now
before you hurt this industry more

If Delaware has banned APU's, then how come the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is 100% in support of Delaware truckers buying APU's?

    http://www.dnrec.state.de.us/dnrec20....asp?PRID=2302

As for California, I believe all they have said is that APU's must be carb certified, which all newer ones will be.
You can take the driver out of the truck but you cant take the truck out of the driver.

I recently had the mispleasure of spending four days in Portland Or waiting on some frieght. I filled up the truck at the Jubitz, and ran my APU for the four days I was there. Just for the fun of it, I filled up again when leaving. 18 gl was all could get in there! Do the math on that one!

Granted, it's not the best unit on the market, (Frigette 12 volt w/single cylinder Kubota), but I've put over 6,000hrs on it, and it's paid for itself several times over no question about it!

What I think is funny is most of these laws deal with cold weather exemptions when heat is the bigger killer. I believe there is a loophole to all of these laws, take a pet with you. Most city, county and states have laws against leaving an animal in a hot vehicle, to hell with the driver.

Thermo king brand would be the tri-pak (sp?) and they rock. The company I worked for ran the rig masters, pro heats, and tri paks. Tri paks have the best Customer Service backing them up by far. And they seem to have the least amount of problems. As well as a lower run time since they don't have to be running for ac and heat.

    Just my 2c's
