    Default Rates per lane

How can I find out the average rate per lane without paying alot of money? Truckloadrate.com wants 30.00 a month. That's a little too much for me right now seeing as how I need it more for learning than making a living.
Also, where can I find info on inbound and outbound trucks per city or state? I've seen some people post this info before but I'm not sure where they get it other than loadboards, which right now I can't subscribe to. I don't have an MC#

The load boards really don't display what the rates are. Most want you to call to get the numbers. I don't think your going to get a real answer to your question. I've seen rates that are published go from $1.10 to $3.00 per mile all over the country. There are no set rates for lanes as far as I can tell.

there is such a gap in rates you have shown how can you use them to make a decision?
Not all freight goes from major city to major city either.
    Rates are weird.
    And hard to figure out.
I've had a guy pay $4.00 per mile with 4 skids of french fries
Yet a truckload bearly breaks $1.75 going to the same place
I am looking on Internet truckstop 575 Philly to Uxbridge Mass
I do work for a carrier who gets 1450 from Philly area to Leominster, Mass ( 2 loads a day with a 5 year contract!)
How are you supposed to figure out rates?

In the first example the first number is the average rate per mile, and the second number is the average cost of fuel in that lane. It's not two different rates. So 1.47 is the average per mile rate and 2.39 is the average cost of fuel in that lane.

I see what your saying as well though about the rates and how they can vary.

Perhaps using that table is not very effective as far as everyday business practice, but I was going to keep an eye on it more for research, if I can find it.

Don't know where you got that chart but it doesn't show the lanes from the Midwest to the East Coast-I think you'd find a better Freight rate. Outgoing from the Midwest to the East. Coming back out is usually a different story.

I was just curious what his chart showed for Midwest to East.

I don't know how far those loads from Philly to Mass. are but it can't be very far so the Rate sounds pretty good.
Money for the East coast has usually been pretty good.

No, oh I didn't read his post right.
That Philly rate is so far off the charts from what the boards offer. I had no idea that that kind of $$$ was out there. If I went in and asked for that kind of $ they would throw me out on my behind. And yet thats what they are getting. And when I talk to the owner of the trucking co he acts like "what, isn't everyone getting that rate?" So, rates will drive you nuts.

I got it from another site from someones post. I'm wondering where he got from so I can access it. It might not be a full chart, I don't know. I didn't really want to register to post over there just to ask one question, but I can.

Also, how do you check on inbound and outbound trucks?

Rates will differ according to the time of year and commodity hauled. These companies who publish rates are only reporting what is given to them and not all loads are reported. What you see are average rates for those reporting. I have found that the rates I normally get are higher than those I see with these services. These rates should only be used as a guideline when looking at freight lanes. Some of the load boards do publish number of trucks and loads coming into and out of certain areas, but you need a MC number to access those boards. OOIDA has a load board through DAT. I don't believe you need a MC number to subscribe, however you should check for yourself. You need to be a member of OOIDA to be able to subscribe. I don't recall all the features of the board, but you could check it out. I believe it is called members edge or truckers edge. You will see it from their web page. The most accurate way to check on rates is to call on some listed loads. If you don't have access to a load board, you can always stop at many truck stops and check their board. Most subscribe to DAT.

Thanks GMAN, I did in fact join OOIDA this past week. I looked for a board and couldn't find it, must not be looking hard enough, I have it up in another window, I'll go look again.

I found the board, you do need a MC#.

Thanks for your concern, RostyC. I am fine. I have just been on a run to New England. I didn't have cell phone or air card service for about 200 miles. It seems that once I hit Portland, ME, both went out until I got back to Portland. I was about near the Canadian border.

I am sorry to hear about the OOIDA board requiring an MC#. I thought you could subscribe to the owner operator part without an MC#.

Well, you need either a MC# or a US DOT#. The MC I can't do, but the DOT is a possibility.I would have to do some checking as to what's involved with obtaining the DOT# and rules and regs I would have to follow by having one. However,my work truck for my construction business is a 1 ton w/ a 9' utility bed with a 9,900 GVWR. This might be a possibility, I'll have to check. More than one way to skin a cat.

Oh yeah,GMAN, welcome to the cramped but ever so happy Northeast! There's always room for one more you just have to squeeze in 8)

There is some beautiful country up your way, once you get away from the cities. My wife had never been that far up East. She had hoped to see a moose while we were in Maine, but didn't see anything. My biggest complaint is the tolls. It can cost a fortune in a big truck to run the Northeast and New England. They are sure proud of those toll roads. :P I rarely go any farther north than Baltimore or sometimes New Jersey. This is the first time in several years that I have visited that part of the world. After paying all those tolls, I remember why I rarely go there.

yeah, there is some nice country up here. I'm north of Baltimore in Hampstead. Close to PA. Used to be if you blinked your eye you'd miss it, now it feels like a metropolis, to me anyway. Next time you're out this way give a shout.
