Default NEW TO O/OP, HAVE QUESTIONS

Ok, hopefully someone reads this, its my 1st post. I use my truck/trailer for my private business and do not hire out. I have a DOT# and NY HUT.
However winters are slow. My father has his own company with authority, SSR's, IFTA, IRP, etc. I am located in PA, he is in TN. He has also yet to lease anyone on with him, but is able to do so.

MY question is what do I use as mine and what do I use from him. It will only be a few months to get outa the snow, then I can return back to my work. My insurance, DOT, etc is all set up as a private carrier.

If you want to use his authority, you will need to use his MC#, DOT #, etc., You will also need to put his signs on the door. Insurance will need to be through him, since you will be using his MC#. You cannot haul commercially without having authority. That means that IFTA, SSR, etc., will need to be in his name. If you have your cab card in your name, you will need to have a lease with your Dad and submit a copy to your state, if you want to keep your own base plates. You will be required to have his IRP, etc., which will be a little more money. With the base plate, it is usually only a small fee for making the change. In Tennessee it is only $2.75.

What do you mean the insurance has to be through him? We are leased to a carrier and he have our own bobtail/physical damage through North Star. Are you talking cargo liability insurance?

I am talking about cargo and liability insurance. You must have cargo and liability insurance on every truck you have under your authority. The insurance must be in the name of the holder of motor carrier authority. You only need bobtail insurance if you are leased to a carrier. If you run under your own authority and own your trucks, you are not required to have bobtail insurance.

I think we all agree- you know a lot... and you sure do post a lot! Thanks for clearing up my insurance question. I figured that was what you were talking about but then I thought maybe you were talking about something else... hmm... this o/o stuff sure gets confusing!

Thanks a ton. Its also great having someone from the Vol state on the other end. So your saying Ill carry my bobtail insurance, and just work the rest out through him? He is getting rates this week, and I should know more from there.

I do appreciate your help. I am looking at this to get me through winters, since my equip basically sits idle once the snow piles up.

Also, do I run his NY HUT, or my own?

    Thanks again!

    Chad
