being a rookie, my opinion isn't worth much but unless the load is dispatched with a time allotment for it I dont think you can keep an appointment even if you do have to chainup......

    IT's all about SAFETY FIRST

as long as I make it safely to my next hometime, I'll do what it takes.....

    Yeah SAFETY FIRST...

If the road condition requires chains, it's time to park the wagon. No load is worth the risk of killing oneself or some other self!!!
Why is it when I press one for ENGLISH I still can't understand the person on the other end???

    Default Chains

Yeah if I have to Chain I am parking and going to bed. Chains are not worth the risk factor to go 15 M.P.H

I'll chain up to get out of a situation or to get to the nearest safe place to park it.No load is worth my life(despite what the dispatcher says).

    a newbie here of course...

wondering what your company or dispatch would say if you told them that youre not going to make it due to this weather... would you all of a sudden start getting the crap loads?

also, if the weather is really bad enough that we *drivers* have to have chains on, will the company that we are delivering to still be open... i would think that they would probably be closed as well...

Throwing chains is just not worth it.
Park the thing. I have used a chain to gain a little traction but only for getting out of a spot.
I do carry chains, because in OR you are required to at least have them to go in the winter.
If chain law is being inforced, its time to park it and have coffee with other drivers!

If your company wants to try and push you to run with chains, all you have to do is mention the word...SAFETY.Just simply say something like "It is not safe to run" or "because of the safety involved, you are shutting it down".If it is still a problem, tell them you need to speak to the safety department and clear it with them.Odds are they will back off.Yes,if your dispatcher is a weenie, you will probably get crap loads for awhile. But tell me,is the load worth anyones life?

... i would think that they would probably be closed as well...
Not necessarily, because your delivery may still be 1000+ miles away. Chains are required on some mountain passes during the winter months - DOT checks to be sure you have them on.

...would you all of a sudden start getting the crap loads
Probably not - if ice is the issue. They'd much rather see the load delivered late than scattered in a pasture or down in a ravine somewhere. Everybody's scared of ice - dispatchers included - experienced ones anyway.

EGADS! I can't post fast enough sometimes!

We all geting "crap loads", once in a while! But, if it's become more than "usual", i'd just call in, and ask for the reason! And if they want me to quit, why just not say so!? 8) Of course, you got to be , polite, respectfull, and reasonable! But, let them sence firmness, in your position!

I have only had to sling Iron twice in five years both times it was to get to a safer place and park it.

I drove a tow truck in the great state of colorado right out side denver . we took care of i-70 for the state patrol from the mouse trap to the bottom of Floyd hill (Idaho Springs) the trucks would be going fine up the hill with no chains on till some little 4x4 invincible 4 wheeler would spin out and the truck would have to come to a stop and then they could not get going again due to lack of traction and would have to throw chains right in the middle of traffic in a lane and all the other trucks would stop behind them and be stuck too .. it us to be if you did not chain in Colorado when the signs said chains required for trucks and got stuck it was only a 35 dollars fine. but the state patrol got sick and tired of i-70 stopping right there they got the law changed to 350 dollars fine it you did not chain up when required they can throw this fine at you even it you are not stuck and you are moving along safely .. most the cops won't do it but ticket tommy lazaro of the Jefferson county patrol office will pull u over for no chains ...

i used live for the winter snows and the cars in the ditches i charged more to pull a car out of the medium then i did a truck cause most insurance companies will reimburse them .. truckers mainly have to pay it out of pocket so i was nicer to them

Chaining is part of the job. Hang it get over the hill and put it back inthe rack. If you know what you are doin it will only take 15min. and if you put them on right you will be able to poke along at 35 40mph with littlie worry.

WOW, I never knew that chaining up was an option to so many drivers.

Living on the West Coast we have numerous mountain passes and it has always been a requirement of the job. I get extra pay everytime I have to do it ($19) and If I think I should shut down then I have that right but in reality that is only in blizzard conditions and severe icy situations.

Typically chains are only ran for about 5 miles at a time, just enough to get you up the hill and safely back down.

    Default West Coast

I live on the west coast and the only way I will throw chains is to get out of trouble and park to me throwing chains to get into trouble isnt worth it.
The way I look at it is if the load is so hot then think how hot it will be when I get there tommorow. No frieght is worth risking my life.
