CROSS pens. On my third one in 27-years. Keep a few refills. Just keep it in shirt pocket. Regard it as same as keys and pocketknife when dressing. Same life guarantee as a ZIPPO lighter.

Cross - Classic Century Pens, Classic Century Pencils, and Classic Century Refills

Start at about $30 at Office Depot.

My lands! I think I'll just keep using what I got! Shooo!
Some on there went plumb up to $1,400. I just couldn't see myself paying that much for a pen.

You sure won't find them in a "tin cup" on a street corner...

The worker isn't worth the price of his tools?

Call it a business expense if you want. How much is a box of pens X-times over Y-years? A quality pen (or pencil) is more than worth it's price. A television, a CB linear, a stereo, a tattoo has ZERO business value. Sounds like priority re-set. For someone who grew up or didn't otherwise associate with those who were literate I can see how the reaction to quality's price might be a surprise. For someone used to using a pen/pencil for matters other than drawing lines it's a question not even asked -- they already own one -- as the daily utility of quality is unquestioned.

If someone came on here and asked the identical question about a set of combination wrenches, those experienced would pipe right up about CRAFTSMAN (new, versus tool truck) or, used, assembled from flea markets, pawn shops, CRAIGSLIST or other. Buy the right tool the first time.

If you find a comparable or better pen for the same price that doesn't wear out pipe right up. A CROSS pen isn't the SNAP ON of pens. That some of their pens are highly expensive should be a clue: their quality/reliability has been high for over 60-years. The "status" models use the same refills. The only other one I would consider would be the old FISHER "Space Pen" that writes upside down, under-water, etc.

You might take note that a matched gold-filled set of CROSS pen/pencil has been a senior LEO adornment since at least the 1950's while in uniform. Or pilots, engineers, or others, etc.

I've had the same ZIPPO for 24 years. Another great lasts-a-lifetime-American-made-tool. I might not carry it while working in the yard or crawling under the truck. Same for my watch, wedding ring, etc. The pen is no different. If you don't like carrying it, keep it in the case it comes in.

Someone who is forever "borrowing" the writing instrument of others might consider the assembly of Gideon's army (Judges 7:5).

Since a pen is an essential business tool, get a good one and get your own.

    Rant off

Well.... let's see. I bought a 10-pack of classic black BIC pens awhile back at the dollar tree for ONE DOLLAR. I'm pretty sure that I won't USE or LOSE more than 2 per year, making this a 5 year supply.

I'll probably be dead in about 30 years.... so, that's SIX packs of pens I will need. Hmm.....Y=30, X=6 and f=ONE DOLLAR. That's SIX DOLLARS (plus tax) for the next 30 years!

You said you are on your THIRD pen (in less than 30 yrs) costing at least $30 each. Hmm....

    $90 - $6 = $84 left over for more BEER!

I have been using BIC pens most of my life. I have NEVER had one "wear out" or fail to write FIRST time, every time, until the last drop of ink was used up.

BTW.... I HAVE a Cross "set" around here somewhere. I never use it cuz it produces a very anemic line on the page. I wouldn't give you a DOLLAR for a dozen of 'em.

Go ahead, call a $1000 pen a business expense and claim depreciation on your taxes. Gee, If I can do it with my CB why not a pen?

Anything over $10 for a pen is a status symbol or ego booster. Then again, it's all relative to disposable income. I just don't know too many drivers with that kind of disposable income.

I have to agree. No, I don't use BIC, but I buy a Zebra and use it until someone on the shipper's or receiver's dock happens to keep it, and I have to get a new one. Flashy pens seem to be a target. I'd hate to have to replace one of those really expensive ones for that. Generally, I simply buy refills, but every once in a while, I find myself with a new pen.

I steal mine from the Post Office.
The ones that say <U.S. Government>
I like to leave about 6" of bead chain on it.
I think they are made in China, because they really aren't worth a sheit.

And, use the chain to absentmindedly whip yourself in the face while you're thinking?????

Naw... he hooks the chain to his shirt button so his pen matches his wallet.

Mitch Hedburg once said he bought a 20 dollar pen because he always loses pens and he got tired of not caring

There are some pretty good deals on eBay for some Spy Pens.
The real good Spy Pens, you have to go to an Arms Dealer Convention to get though. They video record, still photo, have a laser cutter, shoot tranquilizer darts, and have a polonium poison drip so you can add a lethal dose to someone's drink when they aren't looking, and will write in UV visible only ink for those hidden messages you need to leave.

That was a good deal Kev. Those run about $3 each. I buy my pens the same way, unless I see a real deal, like at the Post Office.

I like to buy the fat pens with the rubber finger cushion on the end.
I have really big hands, (size 15.5 ring finger) and for years hated those slim pens and pencils! I'd go to the lumber yard as a kid to buy the fat carpenter pencils.

Anyway... this cat really has us all beat.

I did the same with sunglasses. Kept losing them, sitting on them....so i started buying $100 rayban predators, and know what happened? I kept breaking them and losing them....talk about an expensive lesson.

Would like to buy a pair again, cause now i keep buying $10 el-cheap-o's from wal-mart, and i keep scratching them.
