Default Trucking jobs are really disappearing

I always collect the sunday newspaper during the first 2 months of the year in my area because a lot of local companies only place ads in the first quarter of each year. There are usually 10-15 local and OTR jobs in the sunday paper every week.

This year I have seen no more than 3-4 ads for trucking jobs each week since the start of the year. I hope this turns around soon. I am still driving local but I was laid off for 6 frickin weeks over the start of the year.

I have noticed the same thing. Some of it can be attributed to the print media becomming more and more obsolete. Everyone is using the internet now.

From past experience smaller carriers (750 or less) seem to sustain themselves

    better than the bigger guys.

I wonder is this still the case..or is the whole world going down the toilet

GOING? how about has BEEN going, or maybe GONE.....not like this is something 'new'. Country and world have been getting worse and worse over the past 10-15 years. its time everything, including the economy is catching up....

I've been looking around the water haulers here in Texas...

Right now, they have a hiring freeze going on for all these companies around my area. And that means that the energy companies have cut back on the production of gas these well were producing.

Kinda weird....they normally produce 24/7 as much as they could, except around the holidays.....
Deja moo. It's when you feel you have heard this BS before.

Have y'all noticed that the truck driving booklets (you know the ones that have all those ads) are getting thinner and thinner lately.

This link: http://truckdriversparadise.wordpress.com/ will take you to my site with
    -Good / Bad Trainer
    -Carrier Information (Excel Only)
-Job Hots Search file (Excel and Web Page)
-as well as links to pictures for you to look at.

Expediting is different, but the same, but it's different. I'm so confused.

Same way with our paper. On Sundays, there are usually quite a few ads. During the week, not so much. Just local $6.00 an hour jobs.

Here lately, I haven't seen hardly any ads.

I have noticed that but I also noticed that they are all still offering the best equipment, high pay and plenty of miles.
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.

I was laid-off today. I was working for Con-way Freight. I was told by the TM that it could be at least twelve weeks. I was given the news that my families health coverage will be paid for. For at least twelve weeks. Not one to sit around.

Many lay-offs in the driving sector and plenty of ignorant, college counselors persuading students into degree-programs that aren't even hiring much.
Then there's also those CDL-schools who are still getting loads of students who don't even know they're being fed a false-hope in the short-term.

Luckily, I've already happened upon another security company that will give me 40+, so as long as that contract stays up to ride off the storm, I could work on either RN or EMS classes once money starts coming in.
As far as the driving jobs in SoCal, same story, but I'm going to go ahead and keep my CDL active anyway, it's not like things are going to stay slow forever.

It's even sadder when I hear another driver reverts their California CDL back to Class-C due to slow-periods.

I was laid off from Conway myself about three years ago. I feel for ya. I also heard they cut drivers' pay 5% and eliminated the 401k match. Its rough out there. If you are near Toledo try Central Transport. Oddly enough they have been adding drivers lately, mostly in Cleveland though. They started running triples on the pike and landed a couple new accounts. Crappy company with high turnover but its a job and you'll be home everyday just like Conway.

Actually, Con-way cut the pay by 10%.

Only a couple bigshots took 10%. Drivers were 5%. You can read about it here.

I've been unemployed for about 2 months now. And 2008 wasn't a good year for me. So I might end up either getting lucky with a bottom feeder, and waiting out the three years, or finding a new line of work for that time.

Now, of course, it's my own doing. I let my temper get away with me, and quit that last job. However, in my defense, that pusher was truly an exceptional pr!ck...but still, if I had known that getting another job would be this hard, I would have thought twice. Who am I kidding?? I still would have quit.

So surviving is now my job. And I'm lucky. All I really have to worry about is the electric bill, water bill, trash, and food bill. But if I didn't buy this house on tax sale last year, we would have been homeless.

I'm hoping things turn around. And soon.

BTW... I just got turned down by Werner... Burger King, here I come....

Of course I don't live there, but it seems like there would be something opened in the Metromess.

Yeah, I've been trying to get into a driving job since I graduated school in January. It's possibly the ****tiest time ever to get into the industry.
