    Okay.... you're dumb! (just kidding!)

also, i am headed to CA for the first time....not just in a truck, but EVER....and i will be coming in on the 10, taking the 210 around up to Fresno. Any good suggestions to avoid the most traffic? or is anything around LA bad?
Kevin, the answer is in Jonp's post. If you are coming into CA west on I-10, DON'T go through L.A. and over the Grapevine to get to Fresno. I've never taken the Hwy 30 route, but I suspect Rev is right about that part. So, take that to the 215 and go north over Cajon pass on the 15. As you're approaching the Pilot in Hesperia, take the US 395 north exit. Follow that to Kramer Jct, and turn left onto the 58. Go over Tehachapi, and pick up the 99 north in Bakersfield.

No self-respecting Trucker would even try to "skirt" the L.A. area on 210 if his destination was somewhere up the 99. (Unless maybe it was the middle of the night.)

I run 210 about twice a week. Traffic flow is heavily dependent on the time of day. The heavy flow is west in the morning commute and eastbound in the evening. I can run west out of Irwindale at 5 PM and expect no problems. Unless like last week when there was an accident on 5 at the truck lane and 210 was backed up almost to Pasadena. Trying to get into Irwindale from San Berdoo in the AM sux.

58 over Tehachapi is the best route to Fresno though.

I've never had a problem logging 50 MPH in Cali.

I think you are referring to the KINGPIN rule... not overall length.

Question: Are you hauling produce from Salinas to Yuma? If so, how can you meet axle weight with your tandems all the way up?

Also.... just my opinion on your original question. I read somewhere that CHP frowns on anything over 50 mph, but I think you can squeak by with the 52.09mph that your trip works out to. The CHP is not quite as anal as some people think. They KNOW there is a regular commerce requirement for "shuttles" from Salinas to Yuma and back. I don't think they would expect you to stop 30 miles short for your destination AND 10 hour break.

If they DID... and since they KNOW the names of several companies that do that exclusively... they could sit and wait for them everyday and put them out of business.

Obviously, those who are saying "log it as you do it," aren't aware of this "shuttle" operation. First of all, if you logged it in 9.5 hours (as you DO it,) you'd be asking for a speeding ticket. If you stopped short of your destination every day, you wouldn't have the job.... and everyone ELSE would be waiting an extra 10 hours at the produce sheds in Yuma or Salinas for you to bring them their product.

Now, I suppose I'll hear a bunch of crap about the "spirit" of the regs!

Nothing you are stating is represented within the FMCSA regulations. Whether CHP chooses to enforce the regulations or not is their prerogative. No ghosts involved. I'm sure they've enforced the regs in the past, and I'm sure they will enforce them in the future. Assuming that, because of the type of operation you work for, you'll get a "free pass" is foolish at best.

Where does it state in writing that you can only log 50 mph?

Yeah I had sat all day getting loaded and was ready to roll. I usually go up to the 14 and take it to the 58 over to Barstow. Missed my turn and ended up on the 101 and had to go with it. LOL

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've logged many thousands of miles in CA and never had a problem. I got an overweight citation in Castaic which I rightly deserved. The cop even gave me the chance to fix it, which couldn't be done. They looked at my permit book to the extent they needed to write the ticket. They looked at my log to see that I was keeping one.

They save the forensic analysis for accident investigations. If you kill someone, your sh-eye-t had better be square.

I haul packaging down to Yuma, they are light loads, But from Yuma to Salinas I am usually close to 80,000lbs. I am usually good on all my axles.

i just went through salinas. most of the area is 55 speed limit. there are parts where it changes to 65. i wouldnt log the trip at 55, d.o.t. would frown on that, given the terrain and everything. lots of stop lights, turns, small towns which have speed limit of 35. dont sound logical to me. idn
