I have to agree with Gman about the International being a heavy duty truck and i will also agree with Stan on the sleeper room in a 9400.I own a 98 model 9400 with just shy of 1 and a half million miles on the truck and it still is in pretty darn good shape.I have owned several trucks(all brands with exception of the volvo)and each has their pitfalls.........D.J.

I likes my head room. I also likes getting to the bunk without having to "squeeze" into it..or duck into it...or crawl into it. The freightliner condo's are good...but the trucks themselves are not so solid.

I just bought a western star. I am impressed. It has the cab and sleeper space of the internationals and freightliners, and the build quality of a pete or KW. This thing is the quietiest and tightest truck I have ever driven.

I didn't buy new, I am a little afraid of the new emissions. I will let the new engines age a few years before I buy an engine made after the particulate filters were mandated. I did look at a few new 07's but wasn't impressed with the prices or payments.

As for my new (to me 8) ) truck its a CAT 475 1850. Eaton 18918B, 3.42 rears. 2007 with 174,500 miles. It has the 62 inch stratosphere midroof. It has a lightweight set up with aluminium hubs, ten aluminium wheels, and 120 gallon tanks. The perfect tank pulling set-up. I am in the process of getting the fifth wheel raised and all my paperwork done and will be dragging loaded Superior Tanks around the country in a few days.

Oh, and the price: Less than half of a comparable new one.

Since when is CAT available in a Western Star? I've been told that the only engines you can get in Freightliner, Sterline, and Western Star are either Detroit or Mercedes. How did you manage to get a CAT????

What's going on? When I had my truck, I had a Cummins (2000) and if I needed parts for the engine, Freightliner dealers were the LAST place to go. My best luck to get parts was from a KW dealer. I was told by several Freightliner dealers that they no longer even stocked parts for anything but Detroit and Mercedes.

Too many companies going over to Volvo because of the engine choice? I know of a couple of companies that have gone over to Internationals and away from Freightliner because of the engine choices.

I'm driving a Columbia with a Detroit, and they can keep it. Every month, the thing has to go in and get the EGR fixed again. And, just a couple of months ago, I read that the DD-15 (or something like that) was going to be the only thing for all of the trucks from Damliar Chrysler. I don't mind the Columbia, but I sure would like to have a REAL engine in it.

This will be the first Columbia I have driven with a CAT in it. I have so far only driven it for my prehire road test. But it was with a loaded trailer and I liked the way it pulled.

I had a 2000 classic XL with a cat. Cat has always been an option in Freightliner as far as I know. There are lots of Stars with cats as well. They haven't been available in Volvos for quite a while but all the other brands still offer them as options. Cummins will replace CAT as the premium engine option in Freightliner after CAT stops production of their on highway engines.

I only have my engine repairs done at CAT engine shops never at dealers. I prefer Alban CAT but there are some other good ones as well.

From what I am reading. my guess is most of the newer trucks have more problems than the older ones. my 95' intl hase served me well. over 1.2 mil miles & still going strong. too many mandated changes required too soon has made .. i.m.o trucks needing more maitenance.

That's where my head is at. I'm in the beginning stages of planning that route. Tho, I must be younger than you. I figure I have another 10 years to go. Aren't you retired from Law Enforcement? Or am I already gaining on memory loss. :P

Volvo AB and Volvo Car Corporation no longer have anything to do with each other, anyhow.
