I was talking with an old Army buddy of mine and we were talking about Iraq.
He told me that he grew up in San Bernadino/Palm Springs and even that didnt give him a hint of what it was like to live in the heat of Iraq.

I have two close friends over there both driving for Halliburton. One loves it, on his second one year contract, and the other hates it but is waiting out his contract as that is where the $$$$s are. If you quit in the middle of the year contract you are basically driving for 52 cpm and you owe them back commisary and board plus you have to pay your own way out. If you compliet the contract all charges are forgiven and you get a "complietion bonus" that puts you up around $40 an hour.
Live in a closed camp, not allowed out unless on a run. $1000.00 fine if they find a weapon in the truck (friend one has paid two of them) No beer or alcohol. No women. Not allowed into "town". Other than that friend one says he is gona sing up again after this years contract is done in November.
I've thought about it too. Up until now, it meant leaving my wife behind. After her latest thing, I guess I'm not concerned about that anymore. I thought about the heat too. Served in the Navy in North Africa and the day I left, it cooled down 30 degrees from what it was the day before. The day I left, it was 128degrees at Rabat Airport. There had been times when we'd twist a bicycle inner tube into a figure "8", put our arms through it and sleep in the pool with our legs up on the concrete. Rolling over was a rude awakening.
The transmitter site was about 7 tenths of a mile (1 click) from the barracks, and if you wore a shirt and no t-shirt, you'd get burned right through the shirt when walking between them.
I think about Yoopr having been a contractor in Iraq, and now living in the UP. And, I can picture him huddling next to a warm fire during the winters up there.

Choperbob, I don't know the web address, but you need to contact Halliburton in Houston, TX. I am sure they have a website. A guy who was going gave me the address once, but I don't recall what it was other than the recruiting office is in Houston. I believe Halliburton moved their corporate offices offshore for tax purposes.
Yes Sir, you definatly understand the heat equation.Originally Posted by choperbob

Choperbob...see if you can track down Yoopr. He worked for KBR, and may even still be an employee with them. He could help you in a lot of ways. I misplaced his phone number, but if you PM him, he'd still get a notice in his email.

My my my. What bad information. If you quit kbr in the middle of your contract, they get you a plane ticket home and thats it. You don't owe them anything. I have been here 4 years driving now. I quit for 10 months to get some extended time home then came back. Its hot, windy, smelly and dangerous like your average truckstop, but it can also be a rewarding experience. Like jobs at home, its all what you make it.
Wow. I should have finished reading the post by Walking Eagle. There isn't a coompletion bonus. Other companies offer it, but not KBR. If you get caught with a weapon, you are terminated immediately. For the alcohol, we are under general order 1. No alcohol allowed due to the sensitivity of the host nation. Muslims = no alcohol. The closed camp thing is common sense. They shoot at our gate and burm around the camp. Imagine what would happen if you were walking around out there or walking into town. When you complete your year, there isn't a contract to sign again. Its an open ended employee agreement.
Serious question. Not for me but for others reading (Im more then happy with Superior Carriers...)Originally Posted by trans3

Trans3 I have an email into both friends to see for sure who it is they are working for but pretty sure it is Halliburton. Know both of them have mentioned getting their year in to get the bonus, and tax break, and the one who got nailed for weapons was very vocal about the $1000.
Halliburton and KBR split up about 2 years ago. We (KBR) are the largest contractor here. The only other companies are mostly TCN (Third Country National) hires for their drivers. To get the tax break you must be able to show being out of the U.S. for for at least 330 days. If you do less, then you get hit with about 15000 in taxes. To answer the question of why here, there are several reasons. First of all, the money is better than home. I will have my new house paid off in a few years instead of 20 to 30. I was here during the Gulf War and there is some sentimental thing going on here. I can't explain it. Oh, and I am a rush junkie. Skydiving, motorcross, weightlifting, and dodging bullets.
[quote="DDCavi"]I went to support the troops and for the money. I'm trying to get back in but apparently the line goes around the block. Most of the danger is gone so people want the money. It was fun in the beginning because nothing was organized. We just grabbed some trucks, got loaded up and went to CSC NaviStar to find a military unit going in the same direction and followed them into the desert.Originally Posted by trans3
