OTR simply requires the ability to hold a steering wheel and locate the next truck stop to malinger at.................generally for zero compensation.

I have never had my steering wheel sing to me. It must be breathing all that pollution in the city. You seem to have the skills test backward when comparing local to otr. You really feel inferior to the otr drivers. I finally figured out why you would put otr drivers down on EVERY post. You feel less of a driver than the otr guys. Look, you are still driving a truck. It doesn't matter that you don't have to really work to earn your pay like the otr drivers. Shoot, I bet you don't hardly have to know how to drive if you belong to a union. Skills don't seem to matter to the union, only the dues you pay. The union will protect your job no matter how incompetent you may be. I am not saying that you are personally incompetent, but you do have a self esteem problem. You feel threatened or less skilled that the otr drivers. Why else would you feel the need to put otr drivers down in every post. I suppose that is understandable. It take a little more skill to move a load across the country than across town.

    Wow !!!

This is first time I have heard a cross word from Gman.

I have come to the conlusion that we on CAD have been misusing an acronym on a quite regular basis.

OTR is to no longer be used on CAD. I am officially petitioning Twilight Flyer and Ridge Runner to immediately edit out this misused acronym, much the same as my beloved c00lie moniker. Thus, henceforth, the use of OTR will be passe on CAD and may subject the offender to immediate disciplinary measures. Up to and including an unpaid weekend at Carney's Point hook.

The only two acceptable labels for CMV operation from this day forward on CAD will be as follows:

    1. Local

    2. OTL (other than local)

Your understanding and compliance is certainly appreciated.

    “Little Green Apples”

And i wake up in the morning with my hair down in my eyes and she says hi
And i stumble to the breakfast table while the kids are going off to school, goodbye.
And she reaches out and takes my hand and squeezes it and says how you feeling hon?
And i look across at smiling lips that warm my heart, and see my morning sun.

And if that's not loving me, then all i've got to say,
God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't rain in indianapolis in the summer time.
And there's no such thing as dr. seuss or disney land and mother goose, no nursery rhymes.
God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't rain in indianapolis in the summer time.
And when myself is feeling low, i think about her face and go and ease my mind.

Sometimes i call her up, at home, knowing she's busy.
And ask her if she can get away, meet me and maybe we can grab a bite to eat.
And she drops what she's doing and she hurries down to meet me, and i'm always late.
But she sits waiting patiently, and smiles when she first sees me, because she's made that way.

And if that ain't loving me, then all i've got to say,
God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't snow in minneapolis when the winter comes.
And there's no such thing as make-believe, puppy dogs or autumn leaves, no bb guns.
God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't snow in minneapolis when the winter comes.

Mike, I have never belonged to a union in my entire life.

Mike, that is laughable, even to your cronies, that is laughable.

I don't think that I have a self-esteem problem Mike. Actually, I feel that my self-esteem rides along at such a high level as to only aggravate you. Not purposely. You just find yourself in apology mode to the uncomfortable truths that I lay forth. Just skip my posts if I am so rookie, misinformed, etc.etc. Drop it. Take a look in the mirror and say that "I am a OTL truck driver" and get over it.

Why did a question about how hard city driving can be turn into a OTR vs. Local argument?

    This stuff gets old.

Getting back to the original posters question about city driving. Driving is driving. In cities you usually have more traffic. It isn't uncommon to have 4 wheelers try to pass you on your right side while you are making a right turn. I guess they are color blind and can't see your turn signals. You need to keep a close eye on what is going on on your right side. It is easy for a car to slip into your blind side. One of my pet peeves when driving in city traffic is how 4 wheelers will pass you on your left side and cut you short to get off at an exit.

Don't let the children upset you. They like to make every post about them.

I must apologize, BigDiesel. I shouldn't let the children get to me. After all, they are only craving attention. I guess the best thing would be to ignore them.

    City driving?
I`m what you might call "over-qualified" to comment on city driving.
I`ve driven through London, Paris, Milan, Rome, Lyon, Brussels, Geneva, Zurich to name but a few!
Don`t be intimidated! Claim white lines! Drive over the ****ing lines!
Edge slowly and surely towards cars and 4 wheelers, intimidate those ***as! YOU`RE in the bigger vehicle, not them.
Use your size to your advantage otherwise you will get nowhere!

25 years ago a driver here could get away with such a tactic Wot. Now though, all the morons know that they can sue the driver, the truck owner, the trailer owner, if that is leased or outsided owned, as well as the shipper and consignee...so more than likely, once you cross a line, and encroach upon a traffic lane here...their gonna make you hit them.

Its all about the $$$$ here...whether your driving for a living, or driving for "LOTTO".

Most of my OTR driving has been in the 11 Western. LA, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, Oakland and Las Vegas cover most of the "cities" and while some seem easier than others I think it has to do with where you've spent the most time. If you know the freeways it helps a lot getting close to your destination. I disagree that as an OTR driver you'll only see these freeways, I've been in old, old neighborhoods in every city making deliveries.

Knowing how your trailer is going to take a corner, meaning how it tracks with the tandems set is pretty important. Sometimes you have to go half way around a corner and wait while others figure out they will need to back up. As long as you go slow and stop before you hit something it all works.

Sometimes you can only enter a plant from a certain direction and you must go around a few blocks and come in from the opposite direction, and it can be frustrating.

Leaving Compton at rush hour heading North can take hours to get to Wheeler Ridge, I mean 5 or 6 hours.....but S&%@ happens. Once in a while you may even find the grapvine closed do to snow....rare but it does happen.

    I love driving.

Yeah, sorry about that finger-lakes. GMAN couldn't find it within himself to sit back and let the Metropolitan/Urban professional drivers make their appropriate suggestions to the OP. We mostly forgive him for these lapses in judgement, as the air quality at Carney's Point hook is less than optimal and, alas, his intentions are honorable, if not misguided............

Hey G. If BlooMoose will do the honors, I might even be persuaded to straighten my act up completely!
