NEW DRIVER HELP "once again"---class A permit for nothing

I went to roadmaster this afternoon to sign my paper work for school
everything went good, this is the one in west memphis,AR

then the lady told me that i had to take my class A permit test
over again to get a arkansas permit--------then when the 3 weeks are up transfer the AR permit back to tennessee.

is this right ?


I thought you get your permit first then go to the school or company

I thought you get your permit first then go to the school or company

A permit is good in any state.

However, I think what she means is once you get your class "A" license you will take the test in AR. Then you will have to transfer the AR license back to your home state.

Roadmaster may have special requirements. Some schools require you to have your permit before you attend school. Other want you to take the test after you enroll.

No biggee. You have to get your permit and cdl in the state that you test for them in. If the school is in AR, your permit will be in AR, once you get your CDL it will be in AR (but it is good nationwide). Once you are done and you get home for a day go to the DMV and get your license transferred to your home state.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, Air Brakes, Combination ,Doubles and Triples, Tanker , again .

I read your post in order to see if I may be of Help or understand what U had on your mind ? I f I'm not mistaken U have a problem with the General knowledge portion of the CDL-A test ! U have to successfully pass this portion of the test regardless Air -Brakes-ETC in order to get UR permit or licence ?

It is due to the skills test that you have to have a driver's license and permit from the state you are attending the school at.

Yes states will honor a learners permit and allow you to drive but they will not honor the permit of a different state to allow you to test.

When you go to CDL school in a state other than your home one the following happens:

You exchange you DL for a DL in the state of the school
You then take written CDL tests and are issued a CDL learners permit
Once you complete the course you take the skills tests
Then you are issued a CDL
When you return home you exchange your CDL from the school's state for one in your home state.

With that said there is at least one company, Millis Transfer, that essentially operates their own school and does things a bit different. There you have to show up with learners permit in hand, then you go through the course, go out with a trainer and at the end of the cycle you, the truck and the trainer go to your home state and you test out. The big drawback there is that if you do not get completely through the training process you do not have a CDL and must start all over again.

My stepson went to school in Indiana. He had to turn in his Maryland CDL License and get a Indiana License (without endorsements). Once he passed his test Indiana gave him his CDL with A Endorsement and he had to take that back to Maryland. Maryland in turn reissued his Maryland License (with A Endorsement) and charged him $66! What is a pain is he had just paid $90 a month earlier when he got his CDL! At least he didn't have to retake any tests in Maryland.
