    Default Waiting on HAZMAT?

I applied for a position hauling fuel, (1 opening) was told if I get my tanker and hazmat I could show up for work the next. Come to find out that it can take up to four weeks to obtain a (X) due to the TSA. When I told my future employer, that I had passed the tests, but I still had to wait on the TSA and fingerprints, he said he would have to give it to someone else. I was just wondering if there is anyway you can still work while waiting on the TSA, like a grace period or something to acquire your endorsement?

grace period is only if you already have a x endorsement and it expires before you get your background check. if it's your first time, you just have to wait, they are getting faster, it usually only takes a couple weeks now, sometimes less.. get all the info you need here

There may also be a provision that "if you, and only if you already hold a hazmat endorsement" and you begin the renewal process say 90 days prior to your license's expiration date you may be able to get a grace period. However, if you do not have the endorsement, be it H or X....you will not have the grace period.

It surprised me and was pretty quick in FL. After the test, finger prints etc at DMV, I had a letter from TSA in a week and an updated (X) on my CDL that was mailed to the house a few days later.

Thats how it worked out for me in FL as well. I had mine within a week. I think for the most part....if you have held a CDL for a while, it doesn't take that long because they have already searched databases trying to identify people that may pose security risks.

I'm a 10 year Veteran, and I carried a very high security clearance....so they already have a dossier on me....and even when they say it will take months to renew a passport...mine came back in about two weeks renewed.

What sux is the renewal. You gotta retake the Hazmat test and then pay to get fingerprinted again. I got my initial TSA in Jan 2006 - bam fingerprinting. Got a FAST Card Summer - 2007 - bam fingerprinting. Got a passport Fall 2007 - bam MONEY. License up for renewal 02/2008 - bam fingerprinting bam MONEY.

    One big money grab.

Last I checked my name isn't Hazelwood. I have nothing to do with Oceans and Ports. Heck I don't even fish!

Well thanks for all your comments, I was just totally bummed that I was going to have to wait 4 weeks before I could work. The employer is being really cool about the whole thing, he said he could hold out on hiring another driver until I received it. (seeing how I had already passed everything else) He told me he hadn't done any hiring for a few years now, and that he didn't know it was such a pain in the ass. So thanks again!! Lord knows I'll need some more help in the future.
