what to drive?

just curious what kind of truck everyone likes to drive that isnt a rattle trapp, drives comfortable, it seems their is a lot of companies and they all seem to have alot of different trucks i suppose price is a big factor for them but if a person is otr what wood be a good choice all maintained equal.

If I had my choice of trucks, I would go with a Volvo. If I had my choice of model, it would be a 780. Comfortable, quiet, easy to drive, regardless of the model, and plenty of room in the 780.

However, with that said, as a company driver it is really about the company than it is about make and model of truck. Pay, home time, bennies, and above all else, how I am treated.

I realize that its not about the truck but the company.I see a lot of trucks on the road all the time and always wonder what kind or style is the ultimate cruising machine that truckers would love or do love.

I loved the ride of a Volvo, loved the interior of the t600, but i loved the durability of a mack. I drove a 10 year old mackat one time and loved that thing, brought it back with 4 gears one time when the transmission was going.

I can tell you the truck i hated the most, that was a 1975 peterbuilt cabover. wouldnt pass a DOT inspection for anything had a 475 cat and a 15 speed tranny. shifter rubbed on the doghouse and the seat wasnt even bolted down but she sure would fly.

The best over all truck ive driven was a T-600/an isx only thing was it shifted kinda off but then ive driven mostly cats and it was just a little different than a cat.

Funnest to drive, was an old mack/ a cat and 5 and 4 trany that thing would suck you back in the seat like my twin turbo gt3000vr4 will and it would go as fast in reverse as forward awsome old truck.

And i like the W900L sum also

I have driven about everything out here and Volvo has the best ride of any truck on the market today. I like the pro sleeper in the International. It has plenty of storage and closet space and a place for most everything. You never feel cramped up. The same could be said about the Volvo sleeper as far as roominess is concerned. Most trucks have the same engines and drive trains. It depends on what you want in a truck. If you run the Northeast or larger cities a shorter wheelbase is best. If you run mostly coast to coast, then a longer wheelbase usually has a better ride. Most people have a preference in what they like to drive. Each truck seems to have it's own supporters. Some prefer specific brands. If money or depreciation was not a consideration, then I would go for an International or Volvo. I prefer a truck that makes money for me.

Fuel mileage will be mostly dependent on your gearing, where you run and how you drive. If you want good fuel mileage stay away from the hoods, such as the 379 Peterbilt and W900 Kenworth. Both are good trucks but catch a lot of wind. Most of the aerodynamic trucks will do pretty well on fuel mileage.

So they're expensive to purchase and lose their value quickly?

I've never been in a Volvo, but from the pictures I've seen, they seem to have plenty of room and nice sleepers. I really like the idea of having a table with bench seating below the bed. However, I've heard some people say they're not as reliable as other trucks and they cost more to repair. Is there any truth to that?

Now keep in mind alot of you think I'm a young whipper snapper, lol I like that word! Anyway my dad has a 99 Freightliner Classic XL with a Detroit and a super 10 soon to have a 13 in her. He can get anywhere between 6.0-8.0 and that is pulling containers and he runs mountains alot. Now keep in mind though there are just way to many variables to say which gets better fuel milage. Now if they were similiary spec'd and pulled the same weight there is no doubt an areo truck will get better fuel milage. As for me I like Peterbilts for the quality mostly and the resale, but you know you get what you paid for! But I have seen some very nice Freightliners though that have held up pretty decent. But ya know the biggest factor in whether a truck is reliable and have plenty of resale is the OWNER/DRIVER! Now I know there are somethings that'll go wrong that the owner/driver can't do anything about but I feel if you keep it in good running condition and take care of it then it'll last ALOT longer than someone who abuses it. But no matter what brand there are some out there that are just plain JUNK and then there are others that are very very great trucks. But we could go on and on about this forever and ever, it just comes down to personal preference. As for me I love Detroits for the fuel milage but I love Petes for the reliability and quality. Since Freightliner doesn't market Detroits for the other truck manufacture's anymore I would settle for a Cummins.

Don't believe I can completely agree with you there. Thje Classic I had caught a lot of wind too, but since I got rid of it, I'm in a Columbia with a Detroit. Mph and tach run about neck n neck with the Classic I had, but the fuel economy on this one is no better than the other one. And, actually, I'm getting a few thenths less with this one. The Classic may not have as large a grill, but it has a wider windshield and still catches as much wind.
