If you have that little confidence in yourself, find another career. I am going on 11 months out of the truck, probably will be out for at least another 5 or 6. I have no doubt that I can return to driving as soon as I am able to. The only way to improve your 'meager' backing skills is to back up more. Like the old saying goes, either crap or get off the pot.
What school did you go to? DO they have a refresher course you could take to knock of some of the rust?
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.
You are giving this way to much thought just pick the company out of the ones that want you that best fits your needs and start driving .
Where is my that violin of mine... SHESH DUDE! Cry much?!?! You leave Swift on horrible terms, then you act as if you're shocked when they "black ball" you WTF?? What did you expect?? Then you call Celedon, they say yes come back we will even FLY you out here instead of putting you on a stinky Greyhound and you manage to find a petty reason not to go! "oh my backing skills still suck" blah blah blah!
You say when you ask companies about their training program you don't get an answer....so what happens? Is there silence on the line? Why not say "did you hear my question?" or say "Could I have an answer?" HELLO!! The good Lord gave you a brain for a reason, USE IT!
Get a life dude! Be a man! If you want to be truck driver get your butt in a truck and be one!! Stop being so freakin picky! You say USX will take you, go with them! Nice trucks, decent pay. So big deal they expect you do be a first solo driver right off the bat. Most people WISH that were the case!
How many times must I say that Trucking is NOT for Wusses???
The O.P. edited (erased) his post before I even SAW it, but based on the responses....
"Another Wuss bites the dust!" Was it over BACKING??? Heck..... MOST of the drivers out here can't back worth a DANG!
The OTHER half, can't SHIFT!!![]()
Trucking is NOT something you can DO right out of school! If you ain't got what it takes to WORK at it and get better..... then good riddance!
Personally, I don't care if you grind the gears down to "nubs" and take three hours to hit a hole! NEITHER of those will cause you you drift into my lane at 65 mph and KILL ME!
People DECRY the oldtime trucker with his long hair, dirty clothes and snaggled tooth! I say... he's a direct decendant of the mountain man who blazed the trails of this country BEFORE there were "rest areas for the handicapped!"
Once more..... this is NOT a job for WUSSES!!
If you know more than ONE brand of "antibacterial soap," you have NO BUSINESS out here!
Remember... friends are few and far between.

Personally , anyone who thinks its a hard job, is a wuss.
Everything I need to know about driving a truck I learned from watching "DUEL"

Not hardly! That's why they make truckstop buffets! :wink:Is it when your little 12 volt cooler craps out?
I can't believe it..... but I must AGREE with you!Personally , anyone who thinks its a hard job, is a wuss.![]()
This is the EASIEST job I've ever had! What are the HARD parts?....
1) Staying in your lane and not running into me or anyone/thing else!
2) Being away from home and wifey without whining about it.
3) Taking a dump in a dump of a restroom without worrying about TOUCHING anything!
4) Not getting lost because you can't READ a friggin' SIGN! (Or a MAP.)
5) Not being able to put up with incompetence, because it is all around you!
6) Not being able to do the math and see if you are making enough money to cover your time OFF DUTY and IN THE SLEEPER.
7) Not being able to do the math to see how long it will take you to get somewhere!
8: Being afraid you will "melt" if you have to get out in the rain and crawl under your trailer or truck!
9) Finally, and most important..... not having spatial awareness of where your trailer is or is going to go! If you can't "see" the vehicle you are driving (in your mind) without having to CRAWL through a parking lot or street, at 3 mph..... you are dangerous! You are OVER your head, and should go back to whatever you were doing!
No, I take it back! The hardest part of trucking is realizing you are gonna get dirty, and dealing with dirty! If you never got dirty as a kid, and your Momma made you wash with antibacterial soap after petting the dog, you don't belong in trucking! If you have to wear a mask around diesel fumes, or can't SLEEP next to an idling truck..... find another career field!
IF you cut yourself on a piece of dirty metal, you LICK the blood off and wrap a napkin around it with a bungie cord! Then you go deliver your load on time! If it's a gusher, the exhaust manifold will cauterize it for the short term!![]()
I guess what I am saying is..... the hardest part of being a trucker, is being a MAN! And that goes for you women, too..... and you KNOW it!![]()

Couple of questions.Originally Posted by golfhobo
1. How do you handle a deliveries when the only address you have says -- Go east of town to the old school house. No phone number. Can't contact dispatch because they are gone for the weekend.
2. Address say go north till you see the house burned down couple of years ago then turn west. No other information. No phone number. Dispatch gone for weekend.
That is just 2 of the many deliveries I had when I drove for Cummin's Tools.
Many of these deliveries were little one horse towns on back-road county roads. In fact one delivery I had you had to ford a creek on gravel road. That one I drove for about 20 miles on a single lane gravel road to get there.

As long as your polite CLEAN and respectful most folks are more than willing to help you. I always tried to say something nice about the area too. Many folks that live in rual areas are proud of their area. If you go inside the Mom/Pop store spend a little money there. Their prices are not as bad as some of the TS we drop money at.
Some great places to get directions are form the local police, places that have a delivery service such as pizza, auto parts , ect...
Find something you like to do, be the best at it you can be, the money will come.

Yep! That is another good one. There is no sense riding around lost on small back roads where you may get into a sopt that may cost you some big $ to get out of.
