This is almost always true. Most normal people are afraid to shoot someone. If I can get within six feet of you I can take your firearm away from you before you even know what happened unless you have been trained in close combat.

I don't remember the exact statistics but if someone confronts you with a gun and you run, they will miss hitting you 8 times out of 10. Out of those 2 times they do hit you, not one will be a fatal shot.

When a trained police officer does the same they will hit you 5 times out of 10 and only 2 will be a bullet that brings you down.

When in the heat of the battle there are not too many people who can shoot like they do at the range.

These are both rediculous statements. Liberals always use this excuse as a reason not to own guns. A bad guy can try to take my gun if he wants to die.

The correct distance is 21 feet, speaking of reaction time. Then you better be trained in unarmed combat if you expect to win.

21 feet may the be average effective range of a saturday night special but you better be closer than that if you want to take me down before I get off a shot.

If you are within six feet of an assailant you can rush them and close that distance before they can react with an accurate shot (if they do not know how to properly hold a weapon in close combat). Even a common gang banger could get off a few shots with an auto before you could cover 21 feet.

I can take care of myself for the most part, but truckers are sometimes put in shady situations like the one I find myself currently in. Baseball bats? Mace? Tire iron?

This is with a firearm holstered, unless you walk around with your firearm drawn and ready to shoot. If somesone managed to take my pistol, guess what, turn around is fair play, I can now take it from him and shoot him with his own (my) pistol. Or we can just take it from each other all day and neither of us would be hurt.

Is this just a state of Iowa law or is it that way everywhere??

That excuse is one of the most popular ( and erroneous) reasons that gun grabbers use for banning private ownership of guns. It has absolutely no basis iin fact whatsoever.
I'm willing to die to protect my Right to Bear Arms.

Are you willing to die to take them away from me?

I would suggest a flare gun. They are legal, not lethal but they will scare the s**t out of who ever you fire at but possibly burn them. It will also bring lots of attention to you if you need it.

Just don't get caught with one if you have a placarded load. Especially a "flammable" load. They are classed as the same thing as the old burning road flares.

Other than that....its not a bad idea.

Just don't let one loose inside the tractor...they can't really be extinguished

I keep a 24" soild steel pry bar next to my seat.

Very practical. Never had any questions from Leo or dot.

    Many uses to.

    Tire thumper

    Fifth wheel puller

If you over shoot your fifth wheel, you can use to lift front of fifth wheel so the rear drops below your king pin and you can pull away.

To help encourage stuck trailer pins and to place in desired hole to act as stop when sliding tandems

To either open or close trailer door levers.

Plus the forked hook could surely defend you

Have any of you guys ever had to defend yourself while on the road? I drove OTR for 2 years back in the 80's, I never had any problems.

In the past 14 years....there was only one occasion where I thought there might be a problem....but there wasn't.

I think that the most effective means of self defense that I ever had did not involve a physical altercation of any type.

About once every three days, just make it a point to eat at the truck stop buffet.

Drink some black coffe, eat the "eft over from last month fried chicken, ans dome of the beans; a few hard boiled eggs will also help.

Anyone who comes within ten feet of you with the thought of causing trouble is as good as dead!!
