Default CAVES ??? what do you mean by... holly crap would you look

at that. Who the hecks idea was this? I have to say my first visit to the Carthage caves was bad, must of taken 45 minutes to get in my dock (pillars, walls, other trucks) were strategically placed in my area. But my 2nd trip last night was a breeze. The only hinderence was the truck door beating alarm clock that seemed to hapen seconds after falling to sleep. Does anyone else have any cave or other unique setups they have been too?

Trust me the caves in Carthage are nice and not too bad to back into, the ones up in Kansas City are the real nightmare they are old dark and very tight,Carthage are newer and have alot more room for backing!

Carefree Caves Industrial Park, Independance, Mo. Now there is a real nightmare for you.

6 weeks out of training and I had to blindside into a dock there.

The first time I pulled into the caves in Carthage ... I couldn't breath .. the closed in space was to much  .... now I've been in several caves ... Carlsbad and other's, but I was walking  ... but the second time I went to Carthage, it was much better, I knew what to expect and was prepared. .... haven't had the pleasure of going into the others that's been spoken of. ... maybe some day

You want some fun try going to 31st Street and just west of Broadway in Kansas City, MO. I'm not sure you could get a 53' trailer in there. I'm been in there with a 40' container and it was tight.

The caves in Carthage isn't a problem with the exception of a couple of docks. Plus all the waiting time can eat a alot of time.

I agree with Uturn "Carefree" can be a real challenge.

You want a real challenge. Try some of the Post Offices. A lot of them is next to impossible to get in and out of.

Gotta agree with the KC Caves been a nightmare. My father in law used to haul out of the Carthage Caves every week and my mother in law worked for Con Agra in there. My wife says that when she was a kid, they went on a field trip into the caves and were told that in case of a nuclear blast, the survivors in the area would be taken there. Theres enough food and supplies for 20 years for 1000s of people (she isn't REAL sure of the exact numbers).

    Caves?!

Now that you mention it, I do have vague memories of someone telling me about this once upon a time, but I can't remember what the caves were all about.

Anyone care to shed light? Why the hell do they put tractor-trailers inside CAVES?!

    Default trucks in caves

    lets see

    oh yeah

    warm in the winter

    cool in the summer

and no snow shoveling to clear a dock for loading and unloading

i have been to the space center

    and the other kansas caves

they are just good practice for parking

one suggestion is pull your tandem pins

this allows you to set your trl at cali

when you first start to back in

and if your trl swing is too great

you lock your tandems and pull the box forward

then release your tandems and back in

your tandems never moved so your perfectly set up

    to back in

with 0 trl swing since your tandems are all the way back

I know the area...a little bit... I think I was down in there with a 53' and you're right....no fun. I wasn't supposed to be there....had bad directions :x I don't want to do that again.....

I've never had the pleasure of going to the caves....but have talked to enough people who have....including a young lady who suffers from "claustrophobia", she told me her delivery there was the worst day of her life and she went to the KC Caves

The worst I had to do in that area was take a 53' several times into the basement of a shopping mall over on the southside of KCMO right off of Stateline....wasn't all that bad unless you screwed up the turn into the alley that went into the basement...and your tandems had to be allllll the way forward before you turned in off the street....otherwise you couldn't make the second turn.....and some ##%$@#&&**^^%$## insisted on leaving a dumpster on the right side of the entry space to the basement.
Once you got inside...it wasn't too bad.....docks were built parallel to the inside alleys....but you had to be really careful about pieces of angle iron sticking out here and there just waiting to ruin your day
Forrest Gump was right....and some people literally strive to prove it.....everyday. Strive not to be one of "them".... And "lemmings" are a dime a dozen!

Remember: The "truth WILL set you free"! If it doesn't "set you free"....."it will trap you in the cesspool of your own design".

They lost my original "avatar"....oh well.

    Default What about convention centers!

I have to do a lot of Convention centers-they can be a nightmare too, Loading in at the Staples center on Lakers game night springs to mind. Lots of four-wheelers getting in the way and really tight ramps to get at the loading area. Dallas is another good one. A spiral ramp to get into the loading area. I have seen lots of trucks lose mirrors on that one...I reckon they are designed with 48ft trailers and daycabs in mind.
They are certainly a bit tight with my rig....

I have been in those caves with a Peterbilt and 53' trailer. It is quite an experience. You really need to be on your toes and NOT get in a hurry.

First time I went into the Caves I didn't slide my trailer tandems as far as I should have.
Now that makes things interesting :P
