    Default roehl honor program

    Hi everybody,
I am considering hiring on with roehl in their honor program for military veterans. I would not qualify for the tuition part of the program, but I do qualify to be in there salary program for my 1st two years driving for them.

My question is this. Would going salary over cpm be worth it? I would be paid even if I'm broken down or stuck at a delivery. I would not have to worry about getting the miles and every 2weeks I would know what I am getting.

My 1st year salary w/o any of the bonuses would be between 33k and 37k depending on the division I choose. My 2nd year salary would be between 40k and 45k.

My minimum weekly miles for .30 cpm would be 2150 practical miles.

I would appriciate any feedback and any areas I may be overlooking
If they say it cant be done, do it anyway.

you could do better running mileage your first year than having salary... IMO

I'm a new driver with 5 months experience driving for Roehl full time in the national van division.

Based on my experience and my income and the salary numbers you're giving, you'd be far better off going with mileage pay. As it is I'm already making what I originally thought would take a year and a half to two years to achieve.

Roehl keeps their equipment up so breakdowns are few and far between. And I've only had 2 times where I've had to deal with a lot of time invested in any one shipper or receiver. So for me both of these issues have been no big deal.

I thinks salary would be nice if the job was 40 hours a week. But I also get .30 cpm and 2150 per week =$688 . I am in the truck 5 days x 24 =120 hours per week. $688 / 120 hours = $ 5.73 per hour in the truck Out of that whooping hourly rate I must pay my own meals on the road, cell phone and build a pension and pay my benefits.

Thanks Nickbtubas, Trux, and Evinrude for your replies and insight. The recruiter was trying to make the salary part sound like the best thing since sliced bread. I do like the security of it but also want to make the most I can.

Trux you said you are with roehl for 5 months in the national div. If I could ask you what are your avg weekly miles and are they close to what the co. told you you would get?

    Thanks again for your replies

Well, for better or worse, I never asked them what I could expect for miles. But since I graduated from Evo III, I've done about 3000 per 7 days out.

As near as I can tell, your miles will depend on the skill of your dispatcher. So I'm sure there's drivers getting more miles and some getting less. Of course it also depends on your ability to smooth out your rough edges and maximize your efficiency.

why do y'all think we should get paid for 24 hours? do you work for 24 hours, or do you sleep at least 10 of that? do people that have jobs that go home every night get paid to sleep? change you thought process, you will be alot happier.

You just answered your own question, driver:

jobs that go home every night
Should you get paid for your 10-hour DOT breaks? The answer is YES. Why? Because you are stuck in a work-vehicle away from home, family, and friends and you are 100% responsible for the truck, trailer, and load.

A few companies pay you for sleeper-berth time. Wal-Mart is one. Their drivers make $8.00/hr for sleeping in their trucks.

You just don't GET IT, FrostyMug!! My last job, I worked 4 Tens (with 1.5 hours/day commute) and had 3 days off every week. I was HOME every night for about 10 hours or so. What did I do?? SLEEP!!! (maybe watch a little TV. I ate OUT while on my lunch break, and had no dinner really.

NOW, I work 5 days a week, and am home for 2 (3 if I WANT.) I SLEEP the same 10 hours a day, and get to watch TV occaissionaly. But, I bring home almost TWICE what I did at the old job!!

Does the Military get paid for 24 hour days? NO! Do train conductors? NO! Do travelling salesmen? NO! Does ANY OTHER JOB pay you for your OFF TIME while on the road?? NO!!

If YOU want to NOT get paid for sleeping in your own bed, and get paid LESS for when you are working..... go for it! SOME of us like to make more money than the average job will pay! And if we have to be away from home to do it... so BE it!

I know not EVERYONE is single and free like ME! But, likewise.... not everyone is married and tied down like YOU!!

Give a trucker a little CREDIT for KNOWING where he is sleeping, will ya?

But, STOP this Bull***** about getting paid for 24 hours a day!!!
Remember... friends are few and far between.

    TRUCKIN' AIN'T FOR WUSSES!!!

I am with Frosty on this one, its a no brain er, take the pay. My neighbor is a fireman and works a 2 24 hour shift a week @ $32.00 per hour and gets paid to sleep. He also likes to rub in that his pension is fully fund by the city.

So you're advising the OP to take a salary of 33k to 37k instead of going with cpm and making about 40k to 45k his first year? My own numbers add up to a projected 43k to 44k for my first 12 months on the job.

And the reasoning behind taking 7k to 12k LESS money per year is because firemen and WalMart drivers get paid to sleep?

What i am saying is that I would take some extra pay to be in the sleeper berth.

look around some more!! There are better deals out there then .30pm (forget the salery) Crete will start a new driver out at aprox. .36 cpm and after a year you go up to .41 and they will keep you moveing. With a salery postion like that I would THINK that you will be run to your max all the time and get a lot of crap (IMO) do some more checking around and don't sign a contract for training!

People in the military are on duty 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. Even when they're on leave (vacation) they can be recalled.

Original poster...if you're considering the Honors program don't forget you'll also be receiving your GI Bill money every month.

omg. would i turn down money for sleeping in the truck? no, that would be kinda stupid. do i base my veiws of the trucking industry on the fact that i don't? no. you guys need to grow up and get smart. just because you want to be home all the time does not make otr bad for everyone...it makes it bad for you. you need to remember that some people like to drive truck and make a good living at it. you look to as a job, or till something better comes up. don;t bash the industry because you could not handle it or did not like it. hell, i did not like true otr, i could not support my family on local, so i found something in between. i did what was best for me and my family, that is what everyone needs to understand.

    Okay!

I would like to thank every one for their input. I understand there are a lot of variables to consider on wether to go salary or cpm.

I do not expect to be paid for my sleeper time! I do expect to get thoughtful insight from experinced drivers to help me make the most informed decision possible. I can care less about the trivial things in professional truck driving.

I greatly appriciate all the drivers who provided their input on the original post with out having to argue what previous people posted.

For me personnaly I am looking at a regional fleet and will most likely have to start with a van fleet then move to flatbed when the opportunity arises. If I choose to go with Roehl. I need to get home a little more often then can be provided by a national fleet. So I want to get the maximum amount of money and benifits provided in the regional sector.

So thanks again, stay safe and God speed to everyone.
If they say it cant be done, do it anyway.
