Default Video cameras in your truck.

Anyone have or think having a video camera on your dash looking out as you drive a good idea.Reason I ask is i have 1 of those new Hard drive cameras and think recording everything would be a good idea.So if an incident happened you would have it on tape.

Seems like I saw something, somewhere that they were working on that in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I dont know if they are actually doing that, or not.

it's a good idea this will work great for holding the video camera http://65.102.174.116/rammount/produ...AM-B-149Z-237U you will also need to have power going to it all the time as the battery will not last all that long. i wouldn't record on the internal hard drive thay are not made to run that much and will wear out faster. what we did was use a (walmart $39) dvd/vcr that we have for the back and i just ran a cord from the camera to the vcr and recorad on an 8hr tape.
it works great and yes it did save my butt when a kid said i ran him off the road. all i did was ask the cop the step into the truck and i showed him the vid, he looked at it and said HAVE A NICE DAY and walked over to the kid with ticket book in hand.

If you have the option, set the camera to record 5 frames per second instead of the normal 28-30.

Also, keep in mind, the cheaper the camera the smaller the field of view. A cheap USB web cam will pretty much only film a small area in front of your truck and would basically have to sit on your bunk to get the whole picture.

Double edged sword - while great to protect yourself against others you are also opening yourself up to a lot of scrutiny. I've had cops try several times to access past records on my 'fun' car when they couldn't nail me for what they pulled me over for.

this how i have it setup in our truck

this is the mount i use

this is the view from the camera

if i want to i can have it off before i stop the truck just pull the video out cord and the power cord spin the wingnut and have it behind the seat before i stopped so LEO will never see it if i don't want them to
bouncer did your video camera come with a video out cord...? if so all you need is some long RCA cords to reach the VCR and set the VCR for input 1-2 to get the vid on it and record. ram-mount.com has all kinds if mounts so you can find one that will work for you in your truck. the one i have you will never find as is it an old german camera mount that i have had for years.

ram-mount has motorcycle handlebar mounts that will work on the grab handle. something like this http://65.102.174.116/rammount/produ...AM-B-149Z-237U or check out the catalog and you can find all the parts you need to make the one you need.

    Default Say Woot.

Yeah It would work great as long as the accident isnt your fault.. If you are at fault could be the difference between little amount for ticket or one hell of court cost. Not saying your a bad driver, but face it cops always have some way to turn something around. Example, Car is in front of you stops immediatly, slams his brakes down he just went from 0 to 65 in about 5 1/2 sec. In none conjested highways you would be fine for your following distance. In the city. your screwed. Faliure to control your vehicle and if you hit any car in the rear end your automatic at fault.

The above scenario would be the drivers fault. If a driver is using proper following distance rules, then a read end collision shouldn't really be much of a worry.

Absolutley on the dumass following too close. Can an officer just jump in your truck, rewind the vcr and look at your video without your permission?

    Bouncer,
I have seen a streaming video from this drivers cab and it's a nice quality picture (single camera mounted on top of passenger seat) that automatically changes angles every few seconds or stays in one position depending on the selections. He uses and aircard and runs it at camstreams.com if your interested. He might be able to help with the techie stuff and what or what doesn't work on the road to record your traffic and road conditions.
