Just to add my two cents as a former claims adjuster... In a rear end accident, the person who strikes a vehicle from behind is at fault 99.9% of the time. The rules of negligence dictate that you must maintain a proper lookout and a safe following distance and take the proper care necessary to avoid the accident.

Anyway, back to the original question. NHHunter, when doing the offsets, the biggest thing to remember is not to OVERSTEER. Make small corrections with the wheel. You don't need to crank it one way then back the other way. If you have to do a pull-up, come out at a slight angle. Don't try to get yourself back to your original starting point. Hope this helps a little.

If you wouldn't mind sharing the source of your information regarding downhill grades with regards to the % of the grade , length of grade and gross weight I surely would appreciate it. I have never seen such information and am sure I could learn from it. I have only been driving 2 years and am always looking to improve my knowledge and driving skills.

Going 30 mph down a mountain is NOT SAFE YOU MORON! especially with a 65 mph speed limit..... And for the other guy, it's 5% for about 6 miles.

I haven't entered trucking school yet, I intend to start school in a couple weeks - just perusing and learning from all the experience at my finger tips here... But I couldn't help replying to this.
I have driven pulling a small trailer behind my truck tho, and know just from that how wrong you are fella. I am glad I wasn't the person your friend slammed into. I really can't imagine how on earth you could condone much less suggest that a rig of any size go barreling down any grade at 65 mph... It defies common sense... forget about the mathamatics!!! A few reasons off the top of my head would be... slower traffic, (something your friend apparently didn't concider) a flat tire, road hazards, breaking distance (another thing your friend didn't concider) um just to name a few... And by the way, it doesn't matter what I think or the other guy who was trying to talk some sense into you, what matters is that you are wrong, and your friend is DEAD wrong... The law ALWAYS is against the guy who rear ends someone period. And rightfully so.[/quote]

Unless someone is reading a newer copy of the FMCSA that says plowing into the rear of a slow moving vehicle is not preventable (which I would love to see) this bylaw should clear up any more arguement about who was at fault.
