    Default Hello Again........HELP!!!!

Hey ereryone it has been a while since I posted, I hope everyone is well Here is my situation, I retired from my profesion in 06. Went to driving school and graduated in May 06. I went to work for ODFL as a student driver, got a chance at a dream job in my old profesion, so I resigned from ODFL and took the job.

That job is now changing, and I want to get back to driving. I spent 2 months with ODFL, I left there on good terms. My CDL is current 0 accidents, 0 tickets. I am not sure where to start looking, or am I just screwed. Any help is appreciated.

I agree with madlux and snowman, it won't hurt to call OD and see what they say. A pretty decent job for a newbie driver, considering some of the alternatives.

Yep--leaving a company on good terms and burning no bridges behind you is a definite plus.

    Start by calling ODFL.

Hey Snowman, how are you? Good to hear from you. The dream job has been a great ride, but like everthing else all good things must come to an end, they are adding ground transport to our duties, that's what I retired from sooooooo..... I'm looking forward to getting out of the air and back behind the wheel!! Thanks for the advice on OD, I'm gonna drive up to the terminal Fri. and talk with the terminal manager. If anyone else has other ideas I'm all eers!!

    Thanks again for any help

Well it doesn't look too promising at OD. I went to the terminal fri. , it now has a new terminal manager, he didn't seem too interested, said he would check into it, and get back with me if he had a chance before he went on vacation.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......the search continues. Hope everyone is having a safe weekend!

    Default newbie driver

the straight skinny on being a newbie is

until you have 6 months solo experience with no tickets or accidents

its real hard to get hired

except by werner or swift or schnieder

i starved in my first 7 months at werner but did my apprentice time

at 7 months i went to useless express/u s express and got 6 more months in

so i could claim 1 year solo and a clean record

i call them useless for a reason

they promised me 2500 miles a week and i was going to be a high priority

driver on their 48 state x d division

i put up with their non existant 2500 a week for 6 months

because the pay was better than werner

then i left after filling a fed complaint to get paid my full miles pay

my statement to stacy powell when he gave me his over the phone bull

was am i quitting or are you firing me

i applied to crete and with 13 months started at 38 a mile

which went to 41 a mile in sept 06 and is now 42/thats practical miles also

    no rand mcnally discount

you may want to try knight transportation after 6 months as i cant say

    how they will be

they also wanted me at 7 months when i left werner

crete paid better at 1 year

my last 3 weeks paid miles

    were 3075 /3270/3050 and i got 1900 before i went on hometime

if you left your old company because miles were short

jan-march /they were not lying to you

    its slow then

do ignore all the fools that will attack this post

because i dont follow their idea of posting style

everything i posted if the way it is

    good luck on the road

With only 2 months of drive time under you, the fact of the situation is that the best you are going to do, unless OD hires you back and credits you with training and all that, is that companies are going to treat you as a total newbie and require you to go back out with a trainer for several weeks.

Because of the time frame involved many companies are also going to want you to take a refresher course before even considering hiring you.

I'm sure there must be an OTR company you could get into. Maverick takes student drivers now and they'll get you home weekends. If you want to stay in LTL then try Conway. They hire with no experience but the hours can be very erratic in the beginning, feast or famine, on call. Another one is UPS Freight, which is where I'm at now. They wouldnt take you as a driver yet but you could get on as a dock worker and move to driver. We have two different positions, part time dockworker which probably pays 10-12 hr, and full time dock w/cdl which starts at 18.55 I think. They would use you in the city as needed. I dont recall where you're at but the website shows dock w cdl open in Fairmont and part time dock open in Bluefield. If you dont want to go OTR and if you can survive on 10-12 hr try other LTL companies as a dock worker to get your foot in the door. Once they find out you have a cdl they'll figure out a way to use it. You might be able to get on as a jockey too. As I recall you sounded like a pretty crafty ole mountaineer, I'm sure you'll figur sumthin out!

Looks like I may have found a new home!!! Homerun Inc. a flatbed company in Xenia OH. I will give an update on the job soon, but it looks like a good fit for me, at least to start, with the small amount of experience I have.

Glad to hear it, Mountaineer! I was concerned. I'm SURE you thought you had been offered a "dream job" and quit ODFL for it, but your timing sucked!

Like someone said, you hadn't been there long enough for it to count as anything. In TRUCKING, the job you had at ODFL (for a newbie) WAS a "dream job," and you might should have kept it!

From what you posted, it sounds like your departure from trucking was for something in the aviation field, I mean IN THE AIR. I can't argue with you that this might have sounded better! I would LOVE to spend my time in the AIR! But, you might need to make a choice. Trucking companies are not real "forgiving" of short duty. Once your "in" trucking, you need to stay the course, and pay your dues. You won't often get a second chance at a GOOD trucking job!

But, we ALL make mistakes! I hope yours won't hamper you too much. Tell us more about your NEW gig!

And say hello to my exwife (your sister!) Oh that's right, she was YOUR wife too at one time, right? How's my stepchildren doing? Bubba got his GED yet??

You're a "goodun" Mountaineer! I wish you the best!
Remember... friends are few and far between.

All true, but I think a guy quitting driving to go back to being a pilot (as I surmise from this thread) might sit better with people than many of the usual stories we hear on CAD. My family got messed up, I got offered a job managing a Burger King, my dog got sick, but NOW I'M SERIOUS ABOUT TRUCKING AND WANT TO START OVER!!!!!!!

Hobo how the heck are you? Bubba says hey! him and his momma are togather now working on a family he did pass 6th grade this year

Just a short recap, retired from the firehouse as a fireman/medic, went to driving school started trucking at ODFL, got a chance to fly on a helicopter at a local hospital as a medic.......(something I tried to do the whole time I was working at the firehouse) now they are adding long distance ground transport to our duties so now I'm done, it was a good gig while it lasted.

HomeRun Inc. looks like a good deal for me I will keep you posted.
I filled out the app, Talked with the owner, he said if everthing checks out I can start as soon as I can.

Hobo I will tell Bubba and Delbert you said hey!
