    Default Driving for HHG companies

What is involved in driving long-haul for HHG companies ? Is the pay any different ? What about the nature of the work ? Also, what're hometime and weekly miles like ? Which are the good companies in this line of work ? Would really appreciate some info on this. Thanks.

You get paid by the weight, and by the complexity of the job. You are responsible for pretty much all aspects of each move - labor, loading, unloading, sometimes packing and unpacking, claims, etc. It is very customer intensive.

Hometime sucks. If you like getting home on a regular basis, then don't go into HHG. I've been home twice this year. That's right - twice. for a whopping 2 weeks. And it's not because I've been running my butt off. You'll do a lot of waiting running HHG. Get that "miles per week" out of your head right now, because it doesn't apply. I ran 54,941 miles last year. I was out 38 weeks, and that was 6 times home the whole year. It's not about the miles. It's about the money.

I'd sooner drive 1000 miles a week for $3.30 per mile (or more).

I don't haul anything for 1.10 a mile, not even to get to a good area. IF it takes you 2 weeks to drive 1000 miles and you are away from home that whole time than you are losing money. This doesn't even take into account the lumper fees. No wonder you are so reluctant to take a shower and don't believe in tipping.

Good luck finding a HHG company that will hire you OTR as a company driver.

But yes - you would be responsible for all aspects of the move if you did. It isn't just driving from point A to point B. That is a very small part of it.

Personal attack? I didn't know you were that sensitive. Lighten up a little dude. This is just the internet. The fact is it takes HHG movers 2 to 3 times as long to drive a 3 day run. Although the revenue per mile may look good, the fact is that time is still money. It may work out good for some that don,t mind the extended layovers, but for most it doesn't.
