Swift and Teamsters?

The employees of Walmart have failed, numerous attempts to unionize in this country, and they have had some pretty serious ogranizations behind them in the process.

So trying to unionize the drivers of one company, the size of Swift - theoretically impossible.

I would have to research whether or not they could legally try it, without retribution from the owner. Hmm, something more to ponder.

It's perfectly legal to unionize any company, private or public. Retribution is illegal, although it happens almost every time someone tries to organize. You as an employee have to be able to prove you were retaliated against. Then there are some states like Texas where unions are limited under law.

That is what I was thinking, many states have limits. Don't know for sure!

When I was working in the refineries down in Corpus, there was a move to unionize the welders and pipe fitters. After reviewing what they were offering to do, and the amount of dues they wanted, it was definitely not a deal we wanted any part of.

The pay increase we would have gotten, would have went straight into paying dues. They wanted to limit the hours we could work. Many of us lover our OT and Double OT during turn-arounds and emergency shut-downs. The union would have prevented all that.

I guess being a native Texan, I have too much of an independent streak to allow someone to tell me when I can and can't work, and have to pay them in the process.

the movie casino was based on a true story. at the end where the spilotro bothers were beaten & buried, the land they were killed on was owned by my neighbor. he was top rank in the chicago teamsters & a top boss who ran the city.
