    Default Parking the Truck

    Hey All,
I'm new to the forum and I am potentially new to trucking. I have signed on with a reputable trucking company and am supposed to start in July. The problem I have is not knowing were I am going to keep the truck when I'm home. I will need to park the cab and trailer some where other than where I live as my neighborhood and house are not tractor or trailer accessable. Please, any ideas? Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tmarc

You need to go look for a place. Get permission when you find a potential place. Anything is game if you can get in and out with your tractor/trailer.

Well first where do you live and second who do (will ) you drive for. Some companies have secure lots that you MUST park in. We need a little more information before we can give you any REAL information back.

Great time to start thinking of this.

Just do what everyone else does, find a parking lot and park it. Dwellers seem to think they have squatters rights. Oh, and make sure to come here and complain when the truck is ticketed or towed. That is part of the deal, playing the victim. :P

    Thanks terrylamar,
Maybe I should have been more specific. I know I have to go out and look for a place. I would like some ideas as to where I should go and whom I should ask. What kind of places do others use?

    Thanks Ridge Runner,
I'll be driving for Maverick and I live in Knoxville, TN. No secure lots here for Maverick. I was told that it would be up to me.

First talk to the company. They may require that the truck be parked at a certain place. Many companies have secured lots that you can park in. There is a small lot near me that several companies use for their drivers to park in while on home time.

It depends on where you live. Rural areas, look for a farmer, grain elevator, factory, etc. Urban areas are tricky, a lot don't want the trucks around so look at storage yards, factory's trucking companies. Also, if you live in the north, you will need to plug the truck in during the winter.

There are several posters here in your area. I'm sure there will be someone here to give you some ideas where to park. Hang tight and I'm sure you will find a place.

    Trucking terminology 101:

    It's not a "cab" it's a tractor.
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.

If you are looking at parking in a stores parking lot (i.e. Walmart/kmart) make sure you get permission from the store manager. I'm currently using a Kmart lot and I park behind the store where they have cctv. Good luck and don't get discouraged.

Well, what i did was try local hotels. And not the fancy chains either, but the cheap ma and pa places.

So actually not hotels but Motels. Try motels first then hotels.

I ended up with a deal of $20 a night. When they find out that you just want to park and don't need a room, they'll probably cut you a deal.

I think for $20 a night, it's better to be safe than sorry.

try looking for some big vacant land. there is plent around where i live. people park for free & nobody messes with their stuff. sometimes if you'll drive around you'll find a gravel lot big enough to get in & out of & not being used. find the owner. make a deal to keep area clean to be able to park there.

    Knoxville?
Sure. Take exit 390 off I 40. That'll be Cherry St. Go North about 1/3 mile and find that little restaurant on the West side of the road. I park behind the restaurant all the time and I'm betting she'll rent you a space, especially if you eat there once in a while.
