Do what you love doing. Money can only carry you so far. If what you love doing does not meet your financial needs, then adjust your lifestyle, and make the material sacrifices needed to do it.
The real issue is not so much earning capacity' there are many people who my earn less than others, yet, because they have developed a sound financial game plan, and have had the discipline to stick to it, thay have far more to show for the work that they have done throughout the years.
There are many people who may command higher incomes who have little in the way of true wealth. They do not live a life of true prosperity, but rather at higher levels of poverty. Yes, they may (and often do!!) live in nice neighborhoods, have beautiful furnishings in their homes, drive nice, new cars, but they also have monthly payments for all or most of those things, and for every dollar they may earn, their is a creditor waiting for a payment.
The current Real Estate market is a prime example of this. The rate of home forclosured is rissing rapidly, and will continue to rise in the forseeable future. Why, because people over-extended themselves on ARM's, and did not have the cash, LTV ratios, or debt/income ratios needed to refinance at a fixed rate.
Go for the money?? You'll forever be a slave to the almighty dollar. Yes, you may earn more, but you will seldon enjoy true financial freedom.
I'm a strong believer in Dave Ramsey, although there are certain areas where I do tend to disagree with him. Be that as it may, there is no question that though his "Financial Peace University" program, he has helped put many people on the road to true financial prosperity.
I require anyone who works for me (from Vice President down Campground attendants, to attend Financial Peace University whether they think they need to, or not. If you work for me, you must attend. We pay for it the course, so it only costs them their time for which thay are paid.
For me, as an employer, it is one of the most cost effective ways to lay a solid foundation. I am very unconventional im my leadership and management philosophies, and their is usually some adjusting or tweaking needed in order to understand just how I think and operate, Not only does attending FPU provide my people with a magnificent opportunity for personal enrichment and fulfillment, but it also offers considerable insight as to hoe I operate. Doing that helps everyone to be on the same page.
Not wanting to hijack the thread here, or to sidetrack it, but most everyone can do what they truly love doing IF they are not only prepaired educationaly, but in personal aspects of their lives a well.

Useless,
you once again come through with an insite that is anything but useless!!! Thanks for the post.
Ridgerunner, I agree with your tag 100%. I like it.
I am also a believer if your going to do something you best to enjoy it. If not, it will not do as good other wise... I rather do something I enjoy and barely make it than do something that I hate with a passion at any price.
Give me the Sea or the Open Road
Useless and coastie,
Thank you for your input about my tag line. I must give credit where credit is due. About 20 years ago my (now ) father-in-law gave me that little piece of advice. At the time I was chasing dollars, and did so for a few years after. Now I'm chasing dreams ( with a plan of course ).
Useless, what kind of company do you run? What you are doing for the people you employ is GREAT! You are giving them a gift that will serve them a life-time. My FIL had a passion for what he did and he had a very sucessful business based on one thing.....QUALITY. The second best thing I remember him telling me was something he later had printed on our business cards:
" The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten".

Your father in law was a smart man, Ridge Runner. Good post, Useless. I am a firm believer that we should all have jobs that we really enjoy.
I've always believed that a man should WORK 8hrs. a day, and SLEEP 8hrs. per day.
My goal in life is to be able to do those things in the same 8 hours!! :P![]()
I have always done what I enjoyed to do most.
My Parents also brought me up with good sound work ethics and a stable way of thinking.
My Dad would say, It doesn't matter what you do in life, long as what you do makes you happy, and son, whatever you choose to do...be the best you can be at it, and you will always hold your head high.
My Mom always told me to not chase after a woman. The woman I would be happy in life with, will come to me. She will love me and support me in whatever I choose to be or do in life. So, I need to only be myself, and be happy with my decisions.
But my Dad I think wanted me to be an Engineer....![]()
My Mom wanted me to be a Doctor....![]()
.......I wanted to be a Rock Star. :P
I ended up as a Piano Player in a CatHouse for a while...then used those skills to be a Porno King for a Glorious Summer in '74 ...Sausalito, California.8)
After that...it's been a downhill slip...but I'm happy. :?
I am glad to see that there are many of us that all share the same beliefs. I am a strong believer that if you're not happy doing something, then what is the point of doing it? That you can be just as successful, if not more so, doing something that makes you happy.
Remember the conversation we had at the Dunkin Donuts we had, devildice?
