It appears that the issue is obtaining a passport. In California if you owe more than $5000 you are not eligible for a passport. I might be able to strike up an offer in compromise to get the amount owed down below $5000. I guess that means no mine sweeper job in Iraq either.

I have been doing a lot of research on the issue of child support arrears ruining non costodial parents lives.

IMHO this is how it is and where it is going in a nutshell.

    1. When child support services began suspending liscenses collections skyrocketed as non costodial parents did whatever they could to keep their drivers liscense. Now the amount owed has tripled as desperate parents are driven underground and out of State.

    2. The suicide rate for single non costodial parents has escalated.

    3. California charges 10% a year interest on unpaid support. Where does this money go? Good question. It doesn't seem to be going to my son's mother.

    4. Most "deadbeat dad's" are low income unskilled workers. Here in California if you fit that category you better know how to speak Spanish (IMHO). I look at the help wanted ads and a lot of them say must be bilingual. One lady working as a temp at my work got dismissed for not being able to speak Spanish (they did not tell her that was the reason but it was).

Anybody know of any super dangerous high paying jobs in California?
I need a way out of this trap and that seems to be the best way. Get rich or die trying.

There is always hope and I cling to the prospect that I will be able to support my son (whom I love very much) both financially and by being there for him.
Reading from the U.S. Dept. of State's website
Section 51.70 (a) (8) of Title 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations states, in part, that if you are certified to Passport Services by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to be in arrears of child support payments in excess of $2,500, you are ineligible to receive a U.S. passport. http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppi...amily_863.html

its a crappy system but its better than the old one where mothers where forced to raise kids without help. I know that in OH if your 6 months behind they can pull your license.
work harder, millions on welfare are counting on you !

Five years ago I would have agreed with you Got Mud. I remember dating this lady who's ex was 10 grand in the hole on child support. I clealy remember thinking "What a piece of sh#$, I pay my child support". Then I got stuck in the twilight zone facing the irony of how the system really works.

I paid my dues for five years outside of the system and picked up my son every weekend. Then one day my wages get attached because California wanted me to provide medical insurance for my son which was fine with me. The problem is I was living paycheck to paycheck and when they attached my wages without warning right when I had medical bills my checks started bouncing along like one of those trucks out of Mexico that are going to replace a lot of you truckers. Next thing you know the instability caused me to lose my job and become homeless. I qualified for unemployment but unfortunately due to Government errors it took six months to get my first check. I met a lot of interesting people when I was homeless. People who had college degrees owned houses and fell off the tredmill. I even shared a bottle of vodka with an Obsession model who turned 30 and was too old to be a model. My point being any one of you can lose everything in the blink of an eye, look at the Great Depression.

I am not one to stay down when I get my ass kicked. I started to get back on my feet and then *BOOT TO THE HEAD!* my liscense got suspended for failure to pay child support and my truck in which I was living got impounded. I went to the court to get the amount owed per month lower but faced a mountain of red tape that I just could not navigate through whilst trying to survive. I asked many different agency's for help getting a good job and was told that there are plenty of programs to help woman but since I was a man "Go fish". I eventually got my life back on the tredmill but now I have yet more road blocks like that one with Swift. I'm not looking for any handouts I just want a hand up. I work hard and feel I deserve it. Its like playing a game of shoots and ladders but the Government took away the ladders so they can make 10% interest off of your misfortune.

Any one of you child support paying truck drivers can end up in this episode of the Twilight Zone. Just get sick or injured or got to jail for a while and get out owing 30 grand. If it happens to you my advice is to get your support order reduced and be persistant and ready to face a lot of BS. Always stay positive and look at what you have and not at what you don't have.

And thank you again for replying because you might have saved me and others out there from just one more pitfall.

If you want to change the way things are you need to do something about them.

This link is a resource of links to the media and Government. If you want to write letters asking for change this is a great place to start. Be vocal, address the issues, and do something to bring about positive change. If you settle for it now you will settle for it later.

    Thank you and good luck.

RedRory, it is more likely that the individuals you stated were dismissed had outstanding bench warrants out on them.....we lost a few during the Swift orientation when I went through it for just that reason.

You can almost bet the house on it, that they are going to garnish your paycheck. Check with your recruiter. Then in a proactive gesture, I would contact the Child Support Division of your state and make arangements with them. Let them know you're trying to get on with Swift and that you'll have to go through their school and a 6 week mentoring period before you start making any money...... let them know just how much you're not going to be making during this period.

Another suggestion would be to contact your local legal aid, you should be able to get your support adjusted due to your limited income......... it won't help with the arears but it will help with the current amounts due.

I've been there and done that myself........... I paid every month on time and as ordered for 10 years. When I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and a condition called acromegaly.......(excessive growth hormone). Two surgerys, a gama knife procedure and not being able to work for almost 18 months left me close to $16,000 behind in child support payments......(Anybody out there considering getting a divorce in Florida, my advise to you is to move before you do..........Florida is very much pro mother minded when it comes to domestic relations).

I know very well that in the blink of an eye you can find yourself in such a situation..........contact the agencies and Swift and good luck.
pain and heartaches aren't options in this life... misery is a choice.
