    Default Newbie question about Qualcomm?

How does QC work? is it like GPS tracking? How does the communications work? All I know is that it is that Ive seen the little white pot on the drivers side of a truck. Thanks James

Basically it is a sattlelite communication device.

You have a keyboard with a small screen that you use to send and recieve messages from and to your company.

Depending on the level of service and how it is wired the qualcomm can also monitor and report your position, idle time, road speed, miles on the truck, etc.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.

Service level can also include monitoring/reporting reefer temps, overspeed, mpg, shift points, etc. etc. See qualcomm.com. BOL

Even though Qualcom uses satellite technology, it reminds me of software that is outdated. (remember BASIC?). The program does not allow word wrap, so it will beep when you hit the end of the line. The illumination button does not help at all during the daytime - during the day, it is difficult to read unless you tilt it at just the right angle.

With the money they are getting for every message sent, I would think they should offer far better services.
I'm not nearly as think as you confused I am!

    Jbenson...

They DO offer better service! I am using a new version of "sky bits", which is like a qualcomm except its installed in my trailer roof, and I am tracked that way. All of my messages/info is sent via a Blackberry and only costs me $10/mo. Its new, you all will be seing it soon.

United has been using Qualcomm for the last 12 years, hoping it would get better. IT HASN'T. They are implementing the new system so that we can (soon) printout our bills of lading in the cab with a printer, and be able to send/recieve data like a scan of logs or recieving emails and scanned images.
