Not entirely true. Any double pivot set can be backed up. It is just difficult and aggravating.
you arent going to back it into or out of a space at a truckstop, no matter how good you are

Doubles can be backed up, just not by the majority!
I used to haul a set of flats up and down the Calif. coast. Where I worked an old Mexican driver we had could angle back a set of flats into a parking space! Don't under estimate the older driver, who have been doing this longer than some of you are old. The drivers of today, some of them anyway would have not made it in the old days....lol

That may or may not be true. I don't proclaim to be good enough to back them up straight more than about the length of the set. 8)

I was talking about the majority of truckstops where space is tight and you have to make sharp turns while backing, no one could back doubles in a space like that. iy isnt a matter of talent, its a matter of physics.

Jumping out of bed to start the truck in the morning is a slightly different story, but it sure wakes me up.

I'm not even an O/O, so it not because I'm cheap. But I do enjoy having one of the lowest idling% in the fleet.
Exact same here. I got a Webasto heater in the truck and plenty of blankets to keep me warm. I've had to idle the truck all night last night and probably tonight again strictly because I want to keep the fluids moving and warm. It was -30 when I woke up in Fargo this morning and it's close to the same up here in Saskatchewan right now. My idle % was sitting at 6 % untill last night...now it's up to 24% :?

EXACTLY! That's how I thought too... Only the guys who had some seniority got one of the 100 thermo king tripac's. So that left me idling basically 24/7
