    Default Questions........Help Please!!!

I'm planning on going to school for my CDL this spring, will be going to Central Tech in Drumright, OK.

I have some questions before I make up my mind 100%

I'm wanting a job that will be "part time" to start out with, as I have a lot of responsibilites at home and it will take some tweaking to eventually work things out so that I can be on the road full time.

So I'd like to work something like 2 weeks on per month, or 7 days on 7 days off, or work 3 days have 3 days off......something along those lines.

Are there companies that will do that???

A friend of mine (ms_ladybug here on the forum), suggested that there are also companies who have contract drivers, for when their drivers run out of driving time, but she wasn't sure how that works or where to find those types of jobs. Anyone know?

She also suggested that their may be companies or owner operators that look for drivers to run for them when they or their drivers are on vacation, injured, sick, etc........, but again she wasn't sure....any ideas?

If anyone has any thoughts or words for me, I'm all ears.

There are companies that have 7 days/7 days off, but there are very few. Transport America and Roehl are the only ones I can think of that have these programs but I'm sure there are more.

Schneider has a "Home Run" program, 7 out 7 in, you and 2 other drivers split the time in one truck, so it's not really assigned equipment. I'm sure you would have to go out with a trainer after you get your CDL.

I have also been hearing ads on XM Radio from CFI as well. Sounds like they are offering some kind of part time gig.

rcpilot, Schneider's "Home Run" program consists of 2 weeks out, 1 week at home. It's 3 drivers slip seating 2 trucks.

Thank you all for the tips, I'm making a list!!!

    Here's another question...............

Is it wise to talk to companies before going to school, or do you wait until you get out of school and then hope to find a job quickly???

Its never too late to start.
Forrest Gump was right....and some people literally strive to prove it.....everyday. Strive not to be one of "them".... And "lemmings" are a dime a dozen!

Remember: The "truth WILL set you free"! If it doesn't "set you free"....."it will trap you in the cesspool of your own design".

They lost my original "avatar"....oh well.

talk to drivers who work for companies that you are interested in, you will see plenty of recruiters during school
the drivers are the only ones who are going to be honest with you.

If money is tight for you, perhaps contacting them before school is best. How are you to learn about company operated/sponsored CDL schools if you are already enrolled ? If funding your CDL training isn't an issue, you might consider contacting prospective employers while in school.
Recruiter visits at your school are common. You might wish to read some of turbo trucker's post about YOU interviewing companies.. If you have a good driving and employment history, and have lived a clean life, (avoided court appearances) all companies hiring in your area will want you. I can't think of any good reason to wait until you have finished your CDL training prior to contacting.

ps. I believe turbo trucker frequents (trucker.net). IMO, he is a master educator of issues involving employment in the trucking industry.

There are some local companies who are looking for the weekend warriors... I started with my company with the idea I was only going to work fri-sun....didn't work out that way, but I found quite a large number of companies who would hire me just for the weekends. Now of course, I'm down here in the DFW area in TX....not sure about your area. But check around.
Deja moo. It's when you feel you have heard this BS before.
