Default Dramatic increase in the number of dead deer.

Does it seem like there are allot more dead dear on the side of the roads lately, or is it just me. I've had more close calls this year than I have had in the last 5 yrs combined. And one bulls eye.

I was faced with this very thing just over a month ago.

My story to safety was as follow:

"I was driving west bound minding my own business at three in the morning, when out of nowhere, without the slightest of warning, I was attacked by three rouge deer. Although taken aback by the suddenness of the attack from the dark and dense fog(I didn't actually tell them about the fog) I was able to stave off the terrorists. It is with great regret that I must inform you that two of the perpetrators were able to escape. I did, however, succeed in bringing justice to one the the creature while only sustaining moderate damage to the right front bumper and headlight area. You will be pleased to know that my actions also resulted in the safe delivery of my cargo with no appreciable delays. When would be a good time for me to stop by the shop to repair the afore mentions battle damage."

Moral of the story, Non-preventable incident. :moose:

Not much of a dramatic increase up here-Every year it's usually between 50,000 to 60,000. Some include fatalities to the person driving.

I've rolled a few in my time.

I am not replying to this thread as to not to jinx myself, you see when you run the 2 lane roads in Michigan at 3am you are basically playing Russian Roulette.

Lets just say in my career I am 8-0 against deer.

I think the problem is there are less people hunting deer. The number of hunters in my area seems to have dropped quite a bit in the last 10 years.

And, let's not forget that this is the time of year that northern and central tier states start putting bait on the highways and byways to attract wild critters to the roadway (some places it's called *salt*).

Christmas! What other time of the year do you sit in front of a dead tree, and eat candy out of your socks!

Well, for one thing, the weather is changing. Getting cooler. Deer tend to hang out in the bar ditches this time of year. The only bad thing about running on HWY 82 from Wichita Falls,to Lubbock,is all the animals. In Guthrie,TX,where the 6666 Ranch is,there are bookoos of deer. The 6666 dont allow any hunting on their land, and some nights, you may see 100 of them out there, especially in the winter.

When I see them at night in a pack in the road I slow down ,and turn off my head lights . They still know I'm there ,But they seem not to get frozen in place and confused by the head lights ,and tend to get out of the way .

In the fall the bucks are thinking about mating so they get stupid. A lot more deer get hit in the fall.

Not to mention that the whitetail population has exploded in the last 50 years.

In early October I was driving on I-80 in the great state of Nevada between Elko and Wells, and there was a dead bull elk in the road that a car had hit. NHP and a big truck were there as well, so it happened not long before I went by.

I haven't hit any wildlife in the last 6 years (knock on wood).
...another place, where the faces are so cold
I'd drive all night just to get back home

I don't think I have seen any more dead dear during the last year as any other time, but it seems that there have been more over the last several years. I hit a dear about 5 or 6 years ago. The state has released coyote's near to me to help lower the deer population. They have also raised the maximum number of deer you can kill during the season in my area as well as other areas this year to help reduce the population.

Driving through Wisconsin, it seems like I see a dead deer every 1/4 to a 1/2 mile in that state. Worst place I've seen for dead ones.

I've had 3 close calls so far, 1 in Wisconsin, 1 in Michigan and the last one was with a moose in Ontario. The moose was the one that scared me the most! Damn thing was nearly looking me eye to eye when I stopped!! They are BIG animals!!

Rifle deer season opened up today, November 27th in Pennsylvania (and many other states) which means a lot of deer running for their lives and hiding out during the day roaming at night so watch out!
If you think you can or you think you can't, either way you are right!

Doesn't matter where you have been, it's where you are going in life that counts!

You know the Warning Deer signs, I was going from Austin to Colorado a few years ago, around Childress, first time I saw a Warning Hog sign. Makes sense, some of those suckers can push 500 lbs.
