OTOH - I will go out and be a COMPANY DRIVER for a couple of years MINIMUM - before EVEN CONSIDERING leasing or buying a rig. I'll "learn the ropes" from the PROFESSIONALS that have been doing it for awhile (rather than thinking I KNOW BETTER), and use SOMEONE ELSES GEAR while doing it. IF/WHEN I DO buy one - it will be NEW or damn close to it ('cause that's just the way I roll) - not some junkyard POS that will make my sphincter tighten every time I see a Weigh Station Ahead sign.

I am (soon to be WAS) in IT for 30 years. I'm not a college puke - I came by my experience in the Navy, and by working my way up to the point where I've had my own company for the last 15 years. With the economy, the whoring of hardware prices, and the glut of IT grads who will work for NOTHING (and the fact that after 30 years in the business I can't STAND the thought of looking at another end-user idiot for the rest of my life - BURNT OUT), I'm getting out and doing what I've always wanted to do since I was a kid - driving a truck - being out on the road - and NOT having to maintain a home & family. Last kid is out of high school, last child support payment has been made. School has been signed up and paid for, bankruptcy has been filed - and in a few months, I'm OUTTA HERE.

It is your ATTITUDE that elicits the responses you get - and it apparently HAS NOT CHANGED in the 2 years since YOU OPENED THIS CAN OF WORMS.

Slick, the purpose of this 2 yr old thread was not to unite newbies(although the title indicated that) and teach you guys something but it was a thread that I recarnated because I was recalling the past and how brave I was to have done some of the things I did.I did not appreciate your comment and that was why I came at you like that.


Buddy, just like you, I was also in IT for 12yrs.I have an AAS in EET,MCP cert, A+ and my last job in IT was 2004,working as a software tester for the Hme Depot corporate.We both came from the same backgraound except I am 37 and you are..............
I took a risk most people will not and it paid off
for me.
You also seem to have your shoulders raised.Being in the Navy,having your own company in the past and filing bankrupt and wanting to come into trucking?
Let me raise my shoulders as you just did.Let me see, my name is henry tanner, my beacon score is 820 with NO BANKRUPCY FILED. I have no car payments.Both the truck and trailer titles are in my suitcase.BTW, I also have my own base plate and will have my own name on my door this year.No kids yet my wife is 8 months pregnant with twins.

Why? So you can make everyone believe that Landstar is something fantastic? I'm sure that's why everyone on the BCO board is griping about the cheap freight, the double brokered loads, and trucks that couldn't legally pass an inspection if they tried.

So you start with LANDSTAR about a year ago from hauling House Hold Goods.You post your numbers in the "owner Operator section for almost 2 months.In just one month you made almost $19k right after you got your Pete out of the body shop.Everytime someone posted their horrible rate you chimed in about how you are getting better rates.Then you go on (edited) and make people feel bad about the rates they are getting.The point is, you were doing pretty good with LS since the time you started.I even called you out on your numbers(rates)you claimed a few times.Then you end up in CALI oneday, and after an agent shafted you, you go ahead and canceal your lease.You then go and sign on with a small outfit who will actually know your name rather than your truck #.


Landstar has many advantages that many others don't, and the difference is freight base and freedom.
Let us compare oranges and oranges.CRST,Jones Motor Group ,Schneider and a few others will allow you to pick your own freight on their intranet and you can take the time off when you want to.The main point is, these people are all the same.Their deductions are all the same.Count the trailer rental fee,loadboard fee,IFTA,base plate,HHC/P, bobtail insurance and many others that they take out.

If anyone is not leasing on to a smaller outfit (maybe with less than 50 trucks where they know your name and not truck#)then you will be at the mercy of these big carriers.You mentioned triple brokering with their agents, but don't you think this is happening with CH Robinson,Schneider and all the big carriers?
LANDSTAR IS JUST LIKE ANY BIG COMPANY, until you can be smart about your future, you will always be at their mercy.For me since I will be dealing with BS everywhere I go , I rather either get my own authority this year or sign on with someone who has very few O/Os or trucks.You made the right decision for your business but you never said that about LS when you first started.

Not quite, but whatever. No sense in arguing it, since what I did at Landstar doesn't change the fact that they aren't what you are attempting to make them out to be.

CH Robinson isn't a carrier. They are a broker.

But since everyone else is doing it, that makes it okay. Why again are you claiming that Landstar is something special, since you're now admitting they are doing the exact same thing as everyone else?
