    Default Testing trailer options.

Does anyone have information on which types of trailers are allowed for your cdl 'a' testing at the DMV? Does it necessarily have to be a van trailer(48 or 53') or flatbed? Can it be a 28' LTL trailer? Or even a 30-40' boat trailer?
Is there a web site that list what is acceptable?

    Thx

any trailer with air brakes can be used. I seen a guy take his test with a daycab and a 39' end dump.

My instructor voiced the opinion that one wouldn't want to test with a shorter trailer because they react faster than a long one and they would be harder for an inexperienced driver to control when backing.

ASK what the policy is at your testing center...They may not want to move cones to accomodate you...

For a class A any trailer with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds with air brakes will work, as the CDL classification states. Yes a pup trailer will work. A 40 foot boat trailer, if it has a GVWR over 10,000 but without air brakes will get you a class A with an airbrake restriction, meaning you couldn't pull anything withe air brakes. Be sure the GVWR plate or sticker is on the truck and trailer.

There's a guy here in Sacramento that rents out a little day cab mated to a 15ft car trailer. Trailer is not required to have air brakes, just the truck for an air brake endorsement(at least here). You should test with what you know whether it's a 28' or a 53' or even a 15'.

I belive its 28' minimum for IL testing. It is possible to do it in a dually and gooseneck w/o air brakes, then come back in a straight truck with air brakes and get the air brake cert at a later date.
