How many of you are married with kids? What do does your wife think of you being gone for 3-4 weeks? My wife says she can do it but I'd like to see how you all manage.

Once you complete training there is no reason for you to be gone for more than 2 weeks at a time, and there are some companies that will get you home weekly.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.
I am married and have one son. My days of being gone two or more weeks is over. I will not stay out any longer then 7 days. My wife does not even want me gone that long but I have to make a living. I do just fine with that amount of time out.
Wife AND Kids hated the idea of me being gone 3 or 4 wks. So I looked for a home every weekend kind of company. If you have kids I would recommend you do the same all kids need their Dad. If it wasnt for the kidos I'd take my wife with me. Good luck.

I have neither but DO have lots of animals and a house that need looking after so I'm home every day. Besides, why stay out that long??? There are PLENTY of companies with home time every weekend and some with home DAILY. TMC has both with excellent pay and benefits too. (even for newbies) Feel free to write or call if you have any questions.Originally Posted by timster

I would also try to avoid the companies that keep you out 3-4 weeks at a time if you have a family. I was OTR, but was home every weekend and even this took some getting used to for everyone, but it soon became routine.
I worked in sales beforehand and would spend a few days at a time away from home somewhat frequently anyway so 5 days out wasn't as big of an adjustment for us as it is for others. Now I run "local" which means, yes I get home every night, but a lot of nights it is 9 or 10 PM or later so it's not much better than when I was OTR.
The number one piece of advice that I would give is to talk it over with the entire family and make sure that everyone who is old enough to comprehend is behind the decision 100%. If the wife is unsure about it, it may not be worth the risk. If everyone is committed to making it work, it would probably soon become routine to you also. One thing I will say, my wife and I probably talked more while I was OTR than we ever really have. Not that we ever had a bad relationship, but you will put much more effort into making the time for conversation each day when you are apart.
Good luck!
