An old salt driver the other day told me he drove a 21-speed tranny in a truck at one time. I've heard of 18-speeds but never 21. Is there (or was there) such a thing? 8)

Maybe he was talking about a Spicer 6 X 4 twin stick.Originally Posted by Midnight Flyer

yep-2 sticks but the Mercedes we drove in Iraq were 21's with a Double H pattern.
 Mine hand would fall off.
I believe Spicer made a 20 speed.
There was a Spicer 21 in the late 60's and early 70's Mainly used in large construction rigs. I drove for Shaffer then (When Domer Shaffer actually owned it) and drove a purple Pete' with one. It was a construction rig glidered to do OTR. (Ugly thing was called the Grape Ape) It was matched with a v-12 Detroit and used more oil that it did fuel. It was a 5X4 with a low-low hole for construction.
Never did figure out how fast it ran but I do know that statie outside of Waco though there was something wrong with his car as it took him so long to catch me.
That Detroit V12 could Haul-Drove one for a few months-Didn't have to worry about Oil changes because you were doing it automatically while on the Road :POriginally Posted by Unicorn
Didn't the older Macks have a five speed or such shift pattern but to change ranges i.e. low, direct, overdrive and reverse all you did was move the selector knob that was on top of the stick?
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.
Spicer made some transmissions like that. They made "non-repeating" 14, 16 and 18 speed transmissions. In fact, they still do for foreign markets.Originally Posted by Jumbo

I remember the Low-Direct-and Overdrive selector on the Side of the Knob but don't remember a Reverse on it.Originally Posted by Jumbo
Why would you want to have that many gears? :?: Sounds like a lot.
I seen a Western Star for sale in the truckpaper awhile back that had a 18 speed with a 2 speed auxiliary behind it.

I used to have a Super Heavy Hauler that had a 12V71 with twin turbos and replaced the blowers with ones off V92 and all the marine conversions. Had Spicer 6x4 with 2 speed rear axles. Could put it in low/low/low and get out and take a wiz, and catch up with it to climb back in, or high/high/high and blow flames outa the stacks accelerating at 90 plus :-) Never hooked to anything I couldn't move including a block square building 5 stories high up on the Slope.
