But i couldnt tell you the last time i doubled clutched.
double clutch is that when you grab someone with both hands???
instructors vary, even if the state handbook specifies having to double clutch some still don`t care, and even if you don`t have to some still make ya do it.
I grew up floating gears with a 5x4, when I went for my driving test the instructor demanded I double clutch, after 5 minutes of grinding the hell out of a 9 speed fuller I asked him if I could finish the test floating the gears with not so much of a chirp out of the transmission if he`d pass me, he agreed and I got my license.
thats my understanding....hmmmm....could be wrong i guess. :?Originally Posted by classicxl

thank you glad i could amuse my fellow drivers. But to really answer the question I do believe double clutching during a CDL road test is probably pretty standard through out the USA. Best thing to do is call your local Motor vehicle dept and talk to the CDL examiner
I'm in truck school in California right now and our instructors are saying it's required at DMV. It's coming along for me but slowly.

It's also usually required when you road test for a carrier - they want you to double clutch.
When I did my road test at Celadon, however, the instructor said "if you can float em, float em, if you can't, use the clutch".
Surprisingly, I tested in an automatic. I never touched it during school, so it felt weird during the test. Luckily I adjusted and passed, but I would have preferred the 10 speed.

Isn't double-clutching where you press the clutch twice before changing gears? If so, why would you want to do that? :?:
only time i can think of do that would be if there is an inspector in your truck but then you would have to be driving for a company
Double-clutching is when you push in the clutch to take it out of gear, and let off the clutch in nuetral, and push it again when you put in the next gear,I think. I never learned how to use the clutch. I have tried it,and everytime I tried it,I would have to grind em,till I found em. I have no idea what the whole point is. Some companies have double-clutching a manditory for their drivers.

Like brian said, it will probably depend on the instructor. Here in North Carolina the manual states that you have to double clutch, but during my test it was never mentioned so I didn't use the clutch. It would be a good idea to practice if your not used to it. Good luck on your test!
Learn to double-clutch. Your better off. My driving school never tought me. I had to learn it the hard way. I just recently had a road test for UPS and failed. The trucks I drove was a 9-speed Mack. Never diven a double-clutch truck before. I need some more practice.

Heh, I guess I will keep double clutching. The guy that trained me at my first and current job tried to show me how to free shift to save on legs, as we do a ton of shifting on our local runs. I figure that I can learn that when I become more seasoned. But I should not forget how to double clutch.

Clutch to nuetral, clutch to next gear and so on...
