Rules and Regulations and DAC, oh my....... - May Truck Company

Does anyone know of this trucking is going out of business?
Also, if you have worked for the, what was your experence?

i worked for uncle marvin before. it was my first job in trucking in 1999.......the were good as a company on the 11 western states. if you wanna work there go in with an open mind.

I too started with May back in Dec, 2006. I left after 4 months mainly because I was driving in the 48 state division which is reefers and I couldn't sleep for beans with those reefers going off all the time. I don't sleep well when they're not running, much less when they are. :)

There's been talk of them going out of biz for a couple years but just about every company goes through that from time to time. I wouldn't let what I believe are rumors stop me from going there if everything else looks like a good fit for you. It doesn't say where you live on your post but if you see May trucks pulling into the local truck stops I'd go talk to some of the drivers.

Here's what I remember most about May, they were extreemly anal about their compliance/logs. I'd get called by the folks in the compliance office on a regular basis about this and that. Mostly minor stuff IMO but as I said, they're very, very picky about that stuff. And they're not always right either. I had been driving a grand total of about 2 months when I got this one call about my logging the fuel stops correctly. After a short discussion I was told that "I should advance my fuel time on the log ahead of my actual fuel time so the gps system would match up better." Ok, I can do that I said, but what if I pull out of the fuel stop, go down the onramp to the freeway and Mr/Ms. DOT pulls me over and ask for my logs, I'm still at the fuel stop according to the log at that point... Oh.. umm.. yea, you're right. Ok, log it as you fuel.

No **** Sherlock.

Anyway, overall I'd say May is a good outfit if you can handle a little bit of "big brother".

I haven't seen how they are doing financially, but I hope they are weathering the current freight downturn as they are a good company. I used to drive the Western 11 states, and enjoyed it. It appears they are paying slightly less than when I was there 1.5 years ago, but I could be wrong on that. They'll give you good equipment, maintain it, and get you home. Most of the trailer problems were drivers being either oblivious to the problem (light out, etc) or being too lazy to have it fixed. The mechanics at Brooks did an excellent job getting the trailer back to operable (lights or tandems didn't slide were the usual problems).

Like every company, your DM will have a lot to do with your satisfaction level. If you drive legally you shouldn't have a problem at all. I'd be back driving for them if not for getting another job purely as a fluke (an old application came through at the oddest time). You won't get rich anytime soon, but they are a good company.
