and why? Noticed this board has a been a bit dead as of late, so maybe this will be a topic that will get some folks talking. I work for Pritchett Trucking out of Lake Butler, FL, I'm on a dedicated trash haul out of Tallahassee, running west to Campbellton, Fl. Even through these rough economic times I'm still able to make a pretty decent living, and am happy doing what I'm doing. So as the title states, who do u work for? How long have you been with them, and what are the things that you enjoy about your job and your carrier, lets try to brighten up the mood around here.......

Sunstate Equipment out of Phoenix. I work out of the OKC store and there are 3 of us who drive the dropdecks and we have 2 Rollbacks. Been with them 1 1/2 yrs and love it. We are as busy as can be and I have been doing between 50 and 60 hrs a week. I'm on call every 2 weeks for 2 weeks, (my choice), and I make great extra money doing that also, double if I'm on during the holidays and a call out is very rare. If I do get called out I get paid a min of 2hrs or whatever it is above that plus the on call pay. Home every night and weekends off and paid holidays. Making good money, great vacation and sick schedule and pretty much whatever I want or need I get but I work my A** off for it because I love to work, and that's not just a line. I don't complain and I show up for work when I'm suppose to everyday. I have a great boss and good co-workers. We run the whole state but mostly just around OKC and the burbs.

Powell - Christensen, Inc / R E Powell Distributing
Only been here for a little over 3 weeks Hauling fuel, oil, propane ect.
Local, work 8 or 9 hrs for the most part, but have worked 12 hours a few times.
Home everyday, Mon-Fri. 8 am till done, weekends off / off holidays with pay
WHY? see above.
So far seems like a good place to work, everyone is easy to get along with, learning alot of new stuff for me.
They say they hire open positions from within and have better paying jobs/routes ( might look into that down the road )

I am in my 17th month at Transport National from Oak Creek, Wisconsin. I am more then happy here. I love the challenge of pulling oversize loads. I am moving up to the next size class in two weeks, Quad axle tractor and tri axle trailer. Next thing up the chart is the quad axle tractor and 2+2+2 trailer.

I'm just starting Month 3 at Cargo Transport, a fuel hauler based out of Milwaukee. They also operate under the name Tank Transport, which is the union side of the company. I'm based in Madison, WI. I deliver fuel to gas stations from the terminals, and I also deliver ethanol from the plants to the terminals. Right now I've been working about 65 hours a week, which is M-S, but only a couple short hauls on Saturday.
So far I'm enjoying it because, like Jumbo, this is a challenge that keeps me moving in a variety of ways. The pay is pretty good too. I really appreciate the fact that I can more or less set my own hours. Even if I keep a schedule, 15 minutes in either direction can be a real difference-maker. I get paid by the load, so the more I haul, the more I make. I do pretty much everything myself, so no lumpers or anything.
The days are long, but I'm home every night. Even if it's only to kiss the wife and kid and go to bed, its nice knowing that if they need something, they only have to wait a few hours, not a few days or a week.
I don't plan on driving truck for the rest of my life, but I'm pretty sure this will be the last trucking job I have, even if its not for the same company.

I always wondered about Twiss, being in Florida they are one of the few companies that operate out ouf central florida and don't have the mega carrier feel to them, atleast that's the way it would seem from the outside looking in. Where do u run mostly with them, i remember seeing them in the northeast a lot, but do u do a lot of west coast stuff? Anyway, looks like a lot of responses coming back on this topic, look with just a little motivation this board woke right up.

I drive for a company out off seekonk MA. we haul seafood going to N.Y., N.J, PA, MD, VA.. then we haul bananas back north out of PA. and DE. I do the local pick-ups in MA, R.I., and CT. monday thru friday, 55-60 hours a week. I used to run the east coast for a couple of other companys but the money sucked so i came back to this. it's more money, home every nite except thursday nite ( my choice. hello T/A branford CT. ), home every holiday, . the hourly pay rate sucks but i make up for it in the hours i work, but it works for now. PLUS i'm a emergency medical technician. I do that on saturdays and some week nites. I was also an on-call fire fighter for 6 years but i gave that up. i'm busy enough as it is.

I drive a transfer truck and haul equipment for a small paving/excavating company here in N. California. I'm in no hurry to leave, but I don't want to drive forever either. Owners are easy going and foreman is easy to work for. Pay is ok, benes are expensive, and some of the other perks that we had when I started are becoming few and far between. When the chance arises I want to go back to school and get into a career with future and some type of retirement package.

Sounds like me and you are in the same boat. I dont have any retirement and it sucks. I am trying to get into the local municipal police academy. I have to take all the tests to get in on Nov.7th. If i pass then i will start in Jan. It cost 4,100.00. But in the long run that 4100 will be well worth it.

I work for YRC. Formerly Roadway Express driver. I leave my house in the U.P. on Sun. at 23:00 and drive to our terminal in Chicago Hts. Il. When I arrive I am shuttled to a hotel and sleep all day. Usually around 18:00 I receive a two hr. work call and head back home . My week ends usually Sat. morning or sometimes Sat. afternoon depending if I have to make a stop in between and traffic in the windy and I don't always get out on Fri. nite. I'm here because the money is good and the benefits for my family are great. Also I enjoy being home with my family which happens every other day and every weekend. Above all else I am a Proud member of the I.B.T. I've been here 7 years and when my kids are all grown up and on there own the wife and I plan to hit the highway together so that she can see some of the things I used to tell her about over the pay phones 13 years ago when I started driving trk.

I drive for Crete carrier, I run a dedicated account in NY and haul inter warehouse transfer loads. I think I've got it pretty good here I'd like a big fat raise but I'm not complaining about the pay. Been doing this run almost 2 years and been at Crete going on 3. I stay in NY and the warehouse I drop at is very close to my house. Its 50% drop and hook, I unload using a power pallet jack and loads ave about 20k I got a sleeper but don't use it, how much more can I ask for? Oh yeah I don't talk to dispatch for months at a time!!

With work being dead now for almost two years out of the 3.5 that I've worked here, I've got to find a way to get into something else, because from the looks of things it's going to be a LONG ride before construction is back up to decent level to where workers can make a decent living.

They're not one of the "mega-carriers". Less than 100 trucks. And, they do have loads going everywhere in the country. They are also one of the reasons that the mega-carriers don't come to FL that much. What freight there is coming out of here is handled by the locals like TWISS, and nothing left over for the big boys. The west coast runs are done by the old-time favorites, and teams. The rest of us get the east and mid-west. I'll be in Houston, TX monday morning, then on to San Antonio and Corpus Christi with about 7 stops. Been a few years since I've been to TX, so I don't know what I'll get for return loads from there.

I generally find myself running out to Kansas City, northern Indiana, and Michigan. A few times, I'll get to New Jersey with a run that someone forgot about and HAS TO BE THERE. Don't like that area, though. Too many tolls. Don't do tolls well at all.

I drive for myself. My speciality is dry van, irregular route OTR. Swift Transportation has provided the truck, freight and routes for 5 and a half years. Swift's customer base and access to freight pretty much assure that I get all the miles I care to run . . last week was 3400, typical is 2400 or so. This year, I've enjoyed about 90 days off, including 24 in Maine, 20 in Oregon and 40+ in places I hardly imagined I'd ever be. I'll make over 50k for the 2ND year in a row, get 3 weeks vacation pay and very good bennies.

My work routine goes like this . . I commit to 3 weeks on the road by providing a zip code where I want to end up. In my case, it changes a lot but for most Drivers it's the home zip. The commitment doesn't mean much because freight moves the truck. It can take as much as 6 weeks to get where I want to go or as little as a few days. I can interrupt my commitment if I find myself in a place I didn't plan to be and meet a good reason to stay. I am told that I earn 1 day off for every week on the road but I have never been held to that standard. As soon as I get a load going to or close to my destination zip, I put in a new one. That way, I get where I want to go, take as much time off as I need and all that time counts toward the next, unreliable, 3 week commitment. This won't work for you home bodies unless you have an extraordinary relationship with your DM.

It isn't likely that I'll change companies anytime soon. While there may be plenty of companies everywhere I go, there are very few that go everywhere I go.

Now, if you see a Cargo Transport hauling fuel in Arizona, well, that's something you don't see every day.

I work for Smokey Point Distributing(SPD) out of Arlington, WA. Get paid hub mileage, bonus pay on LTL freight, and use a combination of trailers(eg. open flats, steps, stretch, curtain, roll top, etc.) to move legal and OD loads for Boeing. I was running dedicated from Renton, WA to Tucson, AZ(3200 miles a week) with a 48 ft curtain trailer until last Friday when my company was underbidded and we lost the contract.

The truck I drive is 2001 379 Peterbilt with 1.1 million miles, but it seems to be well maintain. Since this company truck is paid off, they don't seems to mind if I take more time off then the 1 day off for 7 days out policy. When I had the dedicated run, I didn't have any time off. But, now I am taking 10 days off(not paid vacation) to visit my family and friends in the SF Bay Area.

Before the dedicated run I enjoyed the long runs West-East. Not crazy about East Coast traffic, but the many miles in between and family in PA/NY/CT made it worth it. I get up to Canada(Ontario) from time to time. Since there are a number of drivers with my company can't/won't go North, I have been moving out of the yard when others were stuck on the load board waiting.

It is a small company. I know most people's first names there, but either forgot or never did learn their last names. The only time I use my truck number is a couple fuel stops we use or when I send a QualComm message to schedule a PM. Pretty easy to talk to anyone in the office or shop about any issue.

This outfit is working well for me. If and when I move on it will be because I am looking some new challenge.

It took almost 2 hours to unload, our customer told us nothing over 9 PSI though, so that could have had something to do with it. What all do u haul in your tank, and how long is the average unload? Is it more food based products, or all types of commodities?

Schneider National dedicated Wal-Mart out of Henderson, NC. Took the job because home most nights, 4 out of 5, with 2 consecutive days off each week. Mine our Tues and Weds. Pay is ok and I don't run out of NC/VA much. Once in awhile to TN (we do the Sams Clubs in Johnson City and Bristol, TN) and Florence & Myrtle Beach, SC (again Sams Clubs). No waiting around for backhauls or loads. When we are empty we get a preplanned backhaul that we know of before we leave or come back empty. Downside: starting times for the loads vary so one day I might start at 0800 and the next at 1700 and run all night. Upside I guess to that is I might get in on Sat at 2100 and not go back till 1700 on Sun. If I'm sent a load that I can't do because of hours or I'm too tired from running all night I call and they take it off of me. No questions.

Job is ok. Step up from otr in my opinion because I like to be home.

Sorry, Champ, the economy has shut down pretty much all hiring, Texas too.. But we cycle right along with the economy, no different than other industries..
The question is, how long can you hold out? Reality is that you'll be hired on to something else when we re-open our recruiting! :eek1: It never fails!
But I'll still recommend us when the time comes...

Best o luck!

I saw a McElroy daycab today north of Raleigh. Do you guys have a yard near here or is it a dedicated account that you park onsite for?

Conway Truckload. For an over-thr-road gig it's pretty good. As with every single company out there, there's a few things I'd like to see changed (forced dispatch for one and less "lecturing" dispatchers for another)

Spent the last 14 months starving at Mercer Transportation, quit today and am starting at Mawson & Mawson on Monday. We'll see how it goes.

mercer used to be a great co to work for. this is what the economy has come to.

I'm at Air Products after 11 years at Roadway Express. I really enjoy this job and hope to be here until my time on the road is over.
