View Full Version : Need a Ride
runaround

I am a new driver, almost 6 months driving. I have gotten off to a bad start and really need someone who would be willing to give me a chance.
I am willing to start out as a trainee, ride along with someone as part of a team, whatever it takes.
My lack of experience along with 3 incidents are killing me. I will gladly explain the 3 incidents to anyone who thinks they could help.
If there is anyone who knows of a company that will give me a chance, an owner operator or someone willing to take on a new driver, even for a couple of months as part of a team, please let me know.
Hopeful.

That he screwed up and had 3 "incidents" in 6 months? Sure, I could buy that - sounds like KEVIN.
OTOH - don't think there's much anyone HERE could do for him...

Well, hey, it must be nice to be perfect. You know nothing about what happened with me, what I went through with the for crap company I was with, the for crap trainer I was with. My incidents were pretty minor, one should and very well could, have gone unreported, but I was trying to follow the rules and do the right thing.
But, hey, the road is certainly safer because all you perfect people are out there....

well, you are looking for someone to help you out. By your own admittance you had 3 incidents in a short time. You are not willing to explain what they are, but everyone is supposed to take on good faith that they were no big deal.
These things happened because of something you did not do right, stationary objects don't jump out at you. Don't get defensive, but 3 in just a few months time show that you don't seem to pay enough attention.
None of us are perfect. I have had a couple things happen since I started to drive. But, when something does happen, I take it to heart. I mean really take it to heart. I worry myself sick for the next few weeks, and I can guaranty that it will never happen again, because when in the same situation I will make double sure I am safe to proceed.
Can you honestly say that you were let go because of the crap company, or the crap trainer? You are left in charge of the vehicle, no one else. If you don't think you have the tools to do the job, you should have tried for a different trainer, more training, or maybe, this is just not for you.
What did happen? You don't have to share it of course, but you want help and then show attitude when people question your ability to drive.
Look at this from a potential employers point of view. Would you even talk to someone with 3 incidents? I don't know. I guess I would listen to someone in person, who came in clean, respectful and with the right attitude.
Good luck.

Have you applied EVERYWHERE? There must be some company, somewhere that needs drivers that would hire you. You couldnt have been turned down by everybody. Did you try Bob's Trucking in Oil Trough, Arkansas?

You're right, i dont know anything about you, but what we DO know, is you've had an accident every other month. Skip a month, accident, skip a month, accident. Tell me, how many accidents are 'acceptable' in a year?? 3-4.......6? 7 !!!???
What gets me, are drivers starting out not knowing anything (like i did) then blame accidents or being fired because of poor performance on a bad mentor. I've said this before, and ill say it again (cause i have experience in the matter)....if you're not getting the training you feel you NEED, then its YOUR duty to ask for a new one. If you dont, then its simply your fault. Because who are they going to pin your not knowing how to do your job up to company standards......sure isnt me, and it sure as hell isnt the trainer, and it isnt the janitor doing a half azz job sweeping the floors.
instead of saying 'the accidents i've had are minor, and anybody who wants to know about them can ask and ill tell....'....just come out and say what they were. My one lame "accident" i had was described very well by just a couple of statements from a couple of people. One guy told me that i was knocked for a preventable because the company pays you to make good and correct choices. another guy told me that even though it was a tiny little scrape of chrome off a grille, it would have been a different story had another driver scraped the same amount of paint off my personal car.

Like I tell anyone who wants to drive a truck, get into one accident and everyone starts treating you like a leper real quick.
And if you were already sort of a loner to begin with(myself), then you're going to be in for a world of hurt.
I'm still reeling from my accident from two years ago and the only way I've come to grips is to realize that time is the one thing I've got.
So, instead of trying to resume school(6th attempt at college since '01) for a career that I don't care for, I'll settle for my old job, pickup a quick skill(welding cert) and lay low until enough time has passed to where I could get out of this place once more.

Thats exactly what happens i have a backing incident on my record :banghead: wasn't fired from the company for it, but six months after the incident had to come off the road and now have to settle with working local as a fill in driver runing 150 miles out and back 2-3 times a week until something better comes along because, "I'm a leper", and companies think i will continue to back into things. :)
luckily i found a job as a yard jockey/hostiler so i get to practice backing for 8 hours a day 5 days a week hopefully by the turn of the year frieght picks up and drivers are in demand again and i will get another shot at otr driving

Yeah, from Jun '08 to January of this year I managed to get some post-accident time with a mom/pop, container outfit in Montebello.
My only good experience from that job was temporarily experiencing the underground bicycle culture of downtown LA during my off-times.
Rest of the job was utter bologna due to the drama of the perpetually clogged, area freeways and the antics of the foreign drivers in the port and rail areas.
After being let-go due to typical slowdowns and the owner of the truck not being able to pay registration, I was relieved.
Local= DO NOT WANT.

i'm never parking in there again. my truck almost got hit several times. fortunately i was able to get out of my spot.

Notice the guy wasn't in his spot all the way. I hate that place when i comes to parking in the center row. If it is tight getting out of your spot, its hell getting into it!

Backing in, or pulling out??
If possible, I always parked far AWAY from everyone and everything else.
I saw alot of this sort of thing at the Pilot off of the 395/15 split before I got my CDL.

the spots on that driver's right hand side were empty at the time. the swifty was trying to make a left turn. he wasn't paying attention to the off-tracking of his trailer.

he was centered in that spot. the swift driver tried making a left turn and didn't pay attention to the off-tracking of his trailer. it was either a left turn he was trying to make, or he was setting up for somewhat of a u-turn to set himself up for one of those two open spots.

If you look closeley at the lines, he's not centered. But to be fair, he isn't outside the line on his driver side steer tire.

nope, he isnt outside the line on his steer.....he's right on it. and the bumper MIGHT be over, but cant tell. if it is over, is only over by an inch or two. Bet that driver will be sure he's centered in the spot the next time he parks. Thats just plain lazy and inconsiderate of other drivers to NOT get straight in your parking spot. after all, how would you feel if you pulled into a truck stop, at the end of your clock, at the end of your day after driving 650 miles, and the only spot available is a spot where you have two trucks hugging the lines of the spot you've gotta park in???
I would imagine that the guy who got hit will make sure to get closer to the center of his lane in the future.

Runaround,
Look at some of these minor incidents that have occured no one was hurt, but they cost money.
Driver drives into employee parking lot, cant get out, drags trailer tandems across guard rail, blows two tires.
Driver in a hurry backs into corner of shippers building, cracks foundation.
Driver pulls away from trailer, lines still attached (happened numerous times)
Driver pulls away from trailer, landing dollies not jacked down.
Driver gets lost turns around on private property and the truck gets stuck and sinks, property owner has crater on his property.
Driver gets lost, turns around in parking lot and trailer takes out 2 parked cars.
Driver goes under a 10 foot bridge with a 13 foot trailer, makes it to other side (happened twice in a month).
Driver takes short cut in Chicago, goes under a 11 foot bridge with a 13 foot trailer, makes it to other side.
Driver drives off 20 foot overpass and plunges to the ground, he cant explain what happened, 15 minutes after his 34 hour reset.
Each of these incidents the driver didnt think it was a "Big Deal" but they didnt have to pay to fix these things. You probably arent cut out for this line of work. Patience and attention to detail are key.
