I had a personel injury accident yesterday.

I had a load of tire treads going to a tire shop. The tire shop didn't have a dock so the pallets needed to be wheeled to the back of the trailer with a pallet jack. There was just 1 guy there so I told him I would wheel them to the back of the trailer. I got them to the back of the trailer until I got to the double stacked ones in the middle of the trailer. The pallets were 2500lbs each.

I was having trouble getting the double stacked pallets turned around in the trailer. The guy running the forklift came up into the trailer to get the pallets turned. While we were both pushing on the handle and turning the pallets he accidently hit the lever to drop the pallets.

Yeah you guessed it........5,000lbs right on my foot!!!!!

Totally mangled my big toe...Broke it, blew the end out, and tore my toe nail off. I must of pulled my other toes back because it only got my big toe.

I have had alot of broken bones and different injuries in my 50 years but there is no pain that compares to getting your toe smashed.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Blew the end out huh? I wasnt done with breakfast till reading that, Now I am done. If I may ask what kind of footwear did you have on at the time?

Yeah, sorry to hear about your injury. i can only imagine what thats like. I'm sure if you found the right lawyer, you could sue the dock worker for stupidity. Agree with Jumbo, i'm done with sausage for breakfast or brats on the grill for a while. =) hope you have a speedy recovery.

Sorry, man. I'm sure it's nothing short of excruciating, but you're a young guy, so you'll heal quickly. Hopefully, the tire shop will cover your medical costs and downtime.

I smashed my big to as well once,while i was working in a refigerated warehouse. It was one of the more painfull experiences I have had. The factthat my feet were cold as **** already didnt help at all when the impact took effect. My toe was meesed up pretty good and stayed that way for a while. i completely feel your pain.

And of course it goes straight to "you should sue" instead of "why the f*** would you have your foot under a pallet?"

And I too truly hope you have a speedy recovery with no long term effects, but please people, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU AT ALL TIMES.

There won't be any lawyers or medical bills. I stopped and got a motel room and soaked it and got it bandaged up and kept running.

If you see someone hobbling around a truck that will be in.

Glad I got the auto shift with no clutch pedal and it was my left foot.

Yep I completely agree with Rick on that , but I'm so guilty I do the sneaker thing too sometimes. Steel toes don't always do it, I dropped a dead axle from Caravan on my foot and broke some of the bones in the foot, that took a long time to heal. I only missed 2 days of work and I didn't sue either

The least you can do is have it documented. If it was me i would had the manager or shift supervisor right up a report, and have it signed. You never know, later on down the road it could cause some problems... Sorry to hear about that!

Those steel toes (or NMST's, whichever your poison may be) make MUCH better wheel chocks for pallet jacks, carts, rolltainers, etc. than sneakers... but at least you weren't wearing flip-flops.

My brother-in-law got his right leg run over by a Pettibone forklift, loaded with pipe, in 1992. They cut his right big toe off, about 50 minutes after the EMT's cut off his steel toe boot.


He still looks goofy when he tries to run full speed!! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

And yes..my b-in-law really did get run over by the forklift and they really did amputate his right big toe. His calf and foot were crushed to the knee.....they saved everything but the big toe.

Kinda reminds me of the time we were working on a set of dozer tracks and I was using a long crowbar to lay the track out flat to position it for installation. The track suddenly "unrolled" and the crowbar (still stuck thru the track link) came down square across my right foot.

My toes were screwed up for a long time after that, never did go to the doctor though.

Then there was the time I was trying to straighten a bucket pin using an 18 lb. sledgehammer, and the hammer glanced off the pin and came back and nailed me square in the left shinbone.............:eek2:

I agree with Stan, you should have a doctor check it out.

If an infection sets in it could be real bad.

You CAN get nailed by something so heavy that it WILL CRUSH the steel-toe-cage of a safety shoe and cut ALL the toes off - but at that point, you'll likely have completely crushed every bone in the foot anyway - making the toes kinda moot - eh?

He was fortunate that they did not choose to amputate the leg from mid-thigh down!

The bone (femur?) from the knee to the ankle was crushed, the ankle was split into six pieces. Every bone in the foot was broken in several pieces. He developed gangrene while still in the hospital. His stay went from 6 weeks, to 3 months. He spent another 4 months in bed at home, then spent 5 months moving around the house on his hands and knees, because the pain was to great, to stand up and walk on crutches, even sitting was unbearable for him.

It was learned after they had loaded him into the helicopter for the flight to Seattle, that the guy who ran him over, did so intentionally. The piece of crap was mad that my B-in-law had been made yard foreman, with only 6 month's on the job, while the pea-brain had been there 4 years. What Pea-brain didn't take into account was his own work ethic (none), my b-in-law's prior work history..about 16 years of supervisory work, in not only pipe yards, but also a lumber mill log yard.

Pea-brain got himself killed, when a pipe rolled off his forklift and crushed him. That was at a competitors faciltiy, down the road from where the b-in-law worked.

I feel your pain Scott! Last month I fell out of my truck! Had something slick on my shoes, started to turn around to climb out and slipped off and fell to the ground. Landed on my left shoulder and elbow.

Not a good thing at my age and size....the bruises are finally gone, the swelling on my elbow is gone.

What a way to mess up a month of your life..
