It passed, 65 mph in Ohio starting late summer

Not really late summer but around the 4th of July.

I bet the bears will crack down very hard from now until the speed limit goes up (not that they will lighten up any after the raise).

It will probably take me a while to get use to driving 65 mph when a bear is watching:). I know I won't be the only one!!


Ohio to allow truckers to drive 65 mph in 90 days

The measure will allow truck drivers to push the pedal to up to 65 mph on the state's interstates, instead of the current truck speed limit of 55 mph.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A higher speed limit for trucks takes effect on Ohio interstate highways in 90 days under the transportation budget signed by Gov. Ted Strickland.
The governor put his signature on a two-year, nearly $10 billion transportation spending plan at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, hours after it passed the Ohio House and Senate. The budget contains about $2 billion in federal economic stimulus money.

The measure will allow truck drivers to push the pedal to up to 65 mph on the state's interstates, instead of the current truck speed limit of 55 mph.
The budget also will let the state seek federal funds to launch passenger rail service connecting Ohio's major cities.
And, the legislation makes extended unemployment benefits available to an estimated 35,000 Ohioans.

I'm surprised the Feds haven't out and out mandated states to rid the split speed limit because of the safety issue it causes.

It is about time Ohio joined the rest of the country. And the speed limit would have been raised in Illinois long ago had it not been for the governor vetoing the bill. Hopefully, it will pass this time.

Read that article also. Just in my experience when I used to drive to and from work(before I was laid-off) up and down on 75 south and 75 north is that big trucks would run right around 62 anyways. In a little while it'll be legal for them to run 65. Will that mean that some or most will push 67-68, of course it will. Just have a while to find out if the speed change will cause more accidents and complaints. Another thought is how many trucking co.'s have their trucks set at 62 like the co. I was at (Conway Freight) before getting laid-off last month. Good 'ol regualations some are good but in my eyes most are not. Just my .02 cents.:roll3:

I would expect those carriers who have their trucks governed at 62 mph will not make any changes. That is their prerogative. For the rest of us it will be much better to have the higher speed limit. I am sure the highway patrol will miss all that revenue from speeding trucks. I expect them to strictly enforce the new speed limit, at least for a while.

I spent what seemed like half my life in Ohio and Illinois last week, and I'll tell ya that at least in Ohio, troopers seemed to be busier and more abundant, at least along US 30. Maybe it was just my timing, but I don't ever recall seeing as many as I did last week.

And since I drive a Pumpkin, it'll just mean it'll take a few extra seconds to fall behind another truck....

Listening to Road Dog Trucking Channel last night, one of the OOIDA lobbyists behind getting Ohio to get rid of the split speed limits, he was saying how the vast majority of tickets given to trucks where doing 62 to 67 mph, which is the flow of traffic! Statistics clearly show that going with the flow of traffic is the safest thing, not going 10mph slower then it.

Yes with the new limit set to 65 most trucks will be doing 65 to 70mph now, but that is the flow of traffic! It isn't even like Ohio roads are hilly and curvy, they are straight and smooth. They could up the speed limit to 75 and it would still be a safe speed.

I don't think you will see Michigan go above the current 60mph for trucks because of the 160,000 gross laws.
