Anybody getting citations for over length, in FL
#1
I'm 75', and get checked at the scales, from time to time.
Another driver is about 73', and just got checked, for the first time. The scale master reportedly said that all 53' trailers illegal, in FL. Anybody else have any over length problems, in FL?

Okay, I'm pulling for a company based out of FL. I've seen trailers coming into the yard, from all parts of FL and I know at least half of them crossed scales, and the tandems have been in nearly every one of the range of holes to set them at. Never heard of anyone getting stopped and checked. Now, a level-3 DOT inspection, yes, I've had one of them too, but length??? If 53' trailers were illegal in FL, how come so many FL based companies own them?

My axles are fixed, and I get this empty, more so than loaded. There was a news story a year or 2 ago, that FL was going to start enforcing the over all length restrictions - Trucker News or some such, that I don't read any more. So, this fella's report seemed credible.

Every company ive ever hauled for ran 53 in and out of fl. May trucking has a term in jacksonville and thats all they have is '53's. i see nothing in the book that says that '53 are not allowed in fl. Maybe it was where your trailer axle were set. '41 king pin to center rear axle.

Assuming that your kingpin setting was 41 foot or less on a 53 ft trailer it sounds like to me that whoever told you that 53 ft trailers were illegal in Florida needs to go back to school.

53' are legal on all Federal, US and most state highways! There are county and local roads that 53' are not allowed except for local delivery. Note: Directly from the main roads, to point of delivery, and back out. Not as a short cut!
Your best bet, is too stay on the STAA approved routes (highlighted in a real truckers atlas) and only the other roads when needed to get to a pickup or delivery. Be very observant of road and bridge limits - I found myself on a 40,000 lb weight limit road. Oops, good thing my delivery was only a 1/2 mile from the main road!

Sorry about confusing the over all length v. trailer length.
As best I can recall, the article I saw a couple of years ago, suggested that the over all length in FL, was 65', and that FL was going to issue citations for trucks exceeding this limit. It didn't matter, if the trailer was 48' or less. Again, from memory.

So, what does that do to so many of the guys in HHG that have "APARTMENT COMPLEXES" instead of sleepers? (the DOUBLE-EAGLE sleepers)
