Truck Maintenance - FUEL LIGHT

do all trucks come with a low fuel level light...im wondering because i thought i was nearly empty the other day( fuel guage was right on E) and i fueled up and topped off both tanks and only got 198 gallons..and i have 120 each side? anyone have the same problem? i have a 2000 century class.......can anyone help me out?

I just had the same problem with my fuel gauge not being correct. It was not reading full when I filled up. I replaced the sensor on the tank and that fixed it.

only having 42 gallns left in the tanks IS low, theres no garauntee that theres 21 gallons exactly in each tank, you coulda been sucking fumes out of one, and you really dont wanna get the road service bill for someone to come out and get the fuel system primed again, not to mention the 6$ a gallon they`ll charge ya for fuel. :wink:

only really accurate fuel gauge is a Stick.
That is if you don't have a anti theft screen and then that becomes a problem.

On our one truck with the screen the holes in it are 1/4 inch so a 3/16 inch wooden dowel works for us. On the few trucks I've driven I've found that 4 inches of fuel is safe (about 20 gallons per tank) and on the one I screwed up on it was at 2 inches when it expired :cry: . Trucks I've driven seem to burn 1 inch or less of fuel per hour so I go by that - if I need to drive 7 hours I want to see at least 11 inches of fuel in the tanks. YMMV :lol:

It's right on top of the fuel tank and real easy to replace. The sensor was $33.00.

ok looked at it 2day is that the plug in thingie :D with wires comin out of on top of drivers side tank lol sorry im not a mechanic

As long as you're at it you might as well check out your cross over line.

Or you can just plan your refuels to occur at 1/4 tank like I do. :wink:

You shouldn't run your tanks so low anyway.

yeah-good way to pick up alot of Junk if your Pick ups are good.

i drive LOCAL so i try to only fill up 1 time per week! And if im wasting money at the end of every week on unecessary fuel id like to know it

yeah-good way to pick up alot of Junk if your Pick ups are good.

It was a response to the Rev. on running your Fuel down to the bottom of your Tanks.
If you do that you're eventually gonna have a mess on your hands.

Whoe there Marcel, leave that gage sender alone! The way I read your post, you had about 40gl or so left in the tank when the gage read empty. Unless you like running out of fuel, I'd leave it alone. Go by the gage the way it is, and you'll be in good shape. (that's your reserve)

As far as letting the fuel get that low and picking up trash from the bottom of the tank, will not happen. This is because the p/u line for the tank takes fuel from the bottom all the time, most tanks have a "sump" in the bottom so you can get every last drop!

Dirt and water will always end up at the end of the tank.

On my truck the fuel Gage reads a little lower than what i have in it. Usually when i get a little under a 1/4 of tank i put fuel on. I used to let the tanks draw way down until i got a lot of crap into the fuel filter, and had to replace along side the road. What a head ache learned a real quick lesson on that one

so are you saying that i actually did have about 40 gallons left..but thats a reserve or something?? doesnt dirt ALWAYS end up at bottom of tank?????

This is not a good way to pinch pennies. What are you going to do with the money you "waste" by letting sediment clog your fuel system or the cost of a roadcall and $6 per gallon fuel. 1/4 tank should be your lowlevel alarm. Just my 2 cents.
