Big dogs
 

Why is it so hard to find a company that will let you take a large breed dog in the truck? Most of the sights that i've read say 30# or less or 50# or less...

I thought you hung up your keys? You mean your company won't let you have your 900 pound mastiff chained to your dispatcher chair leg? ;) Or are you going back out on the road?

As you read on the other thread, I don't know what i'm gonna do yet.. After the unexpected and undeserved kick in the teeth that i got from them, i really don't want to go back driving there trucks... But if i did go back driving for somebody else, i would like to bring one of my dogs with me... I still have my E.M.T. certificate to fall back on if i need to... :smokin:

There are several reasons why carriers don't want dogs in the truck, especially large dogs. Liability is at the top of the list. If your dog bites someone then it will be the carrier who foots the bill. They will go after the deep pockets. Some shippers won't allow any dogs on their premises for the same reason plus the mess when the owner takes the dog for a walk. And last but not least is the damage to the equipment caused by the dog. Small dogs can cause a lot of damage to a truck. A large dog can do much more damage and in a shorter time frame. Even if you are clean with your dog there will still be hair from your pet. The next driver may be allergic to dogs. And there is still the smell. Most dogs have an odor. I love dogs, but I have never considered putting one in a truck. I would see if you could find someone who could take care of your dog while you are on the road. It will save you a lot of headaches.

You forgot about the xtra cost of idling to keep the dog cool/warm , assuming no apu.
I had a small dog in the truck for awhile and couldn't believe the amount of shed hair that built up even tho she was brushed regularly

Even the short hair dogs shed. The hair gets in the a/c filters and no matter how clean you keep a dog, there will still be an odor.

I have an 180 lb mastiff. Although hes a big baby, I can understand how he could scare some people. Plus he makes cow sized poops. I dont think recievers would appreciate a trucker with a giant dog walking around their property if they were stuck there for any amount of time.
Also, If I dont give him a bath at least once a week, he will start to stink really bad. I wouldnt want to be in a truck with that smell if I couldnt get him bathed

But he would make for great security.....

I'll bet it smells REALLY good in the cab after you've had to take the dog out to use the bathroom while it was raining.

i take my 65 (know its a huge diffrence) lb boxer with me every chance i get. my boss is real cool with it as long as i clean the truck spotless after.. but thats only when i got a sleeper.. my day cab.. it dont work too well! when i get my own truck she'll be with me all the time.
