Question Would you feel safe inside of a self-driving truck?

There seems to be a few companies that are building self-driving trucks. This company says they will be able to turn any truck made after 2013 into a self-driving truck on the highway.

Would you feel safe being in one? I imagine I'd freak out if I were to see a steering wheel of a big rig moving by itself while going 60...

I don't think that I would feel safe with an electronic driver.

The Simpsons did an episode way way back in 1999 about this very idea! It was named Maximum Homerdrive.

To be fair, the driver can take over at any point I believe. I dislike when a driver gets tired or out of hours the computer can take over and keep going while the driver sleeps so they say............bad idea right now. I do find it interesting that in Europe they are farther along with this. Trucks playing follow the leader........so what happens if they get separated in heavy traffic? Thus far no incidents known with that, lead truck has an actual driver the other 5 in line are driverless.

It's going to take ALL vehicles on the road being converted to autonomous before it works well with trucks and I'd feel safe. My question would be, what happens if a crash does take place, who's at fault? Is it hack proof?

Yep, vehicles are being hacked into by a cellphones Bluetooth function if turned on. You turn it on to connect your phone to your car and use hands free calling. But it isn't 12 year Olds doing THAT just yet. It's been adults doing it for laughs with friends or to prove it's possible but showing it can be done tells the younger generation to have at trying their hand at it.

as some of you know... I'm a robosexual, and I'm voting for Megatron for president, but unfortunately he was refurbished in Canada, and parts came from Mexico.
I'm okay with this topic if it doesn't get too offensive and off into open circuitry. ..unless you know binary, of course. (end sarcasm)

Trucks have already had issues with hackers, but not true hacking jobs. As far back as the early 90's, mean spirited mechanics could hook up a computer to the truck and change all kinds of settings on a driver. Mind you, they had to actually connect by plugging in, not wireless like could be done today. Walmart mechanics loved to get a laugh with drivers who gave them hassles. 1 driver came in complaining about every little trivial item possible. Several mechanics got yelled at by their supervisor due to this driver whining, yelled at over items that were HIS problem. Their solution, it was winter time, they set the truck computer so the engine would shut off every 8 minutes when idling. He would have to get out of the bunk and start the truck back up everytime........when he got back a few days later he wasn't very happy, no mechanic fessed up to shenanigans so the supervisor sent the truck out to get repaired by the manufactuer. Driver stopped complaining after all was said and done.
