I am not necessarily saying that I believe drivers should drive more hours. But, in reality, there are days that I could work 14 hours and do just fine and others where I don't feel like driving more than 8 hours. With the strict HOS rules, we don't have that flexibility. The number of hours doesn't really mean much to drivers in that we are not compensated hourly, for the most part. Most drivers pay is performance based, usually on mileage. I would like the government to get out of establishing how we can work. Most would rest when they are tired.

I would like to see it changed to more of a shift thing than hos. It is proven that humans work best when they sleep sat about the same time each night. I run into my biggest issues of fatigue when I am 100% legal.
Say you get dispatched on your load first thing in the morning. Now you drive to the shipper which takes 2 hours. When you get there you discover the load isn't ready and are unable to get an eta as to when it will be.
So by now it is 9am and you slept all night. 10 hours later they are ready to load you. You are loaded and ready to leave at 7:30pm and you had a 10 hour break. You should be fresh and able to make your delivery at 9am the following morning 600 miles away right?

I try to plan so that I can shut down by a certain time each night. Things don't always work out where I can do that, but most of the time I can work it out. When you run OTR, you primarily run irregular routes. That can be challenging when it comes to sleep times. It is best to try and adhere to a certain schedule, whether it is eating or sleeping. I am usually completely out of steam around 1 or 2 am so I try to shut down by midnight, at the latest. As elogs become more prevalent, it is becoming more difficult to find a parking spot after 6 pm. That is an issue that has not been adequately addressed by the feds. Some states have taken steps to expand parking, but especially on the east coast, parking is becoming more and more difficult. Most experienced drivers try to plan ahead, but it only takes one shipper wasting time to throw a monkey wrench into our plans. If shippers did a better job of scheduling and loading in a timely manner our jobs would be much easier.

I'll take whatever I can get pay wise but I also understand its a supply demand issue. In 2008 when the crap hit the fan, payrates dropped and raises were frozen. Even the Unions placed freezes on new pensions.

Can getting to the truck stop be defined as personal driving time?
I used to do this all the time! Never had a problem.

Funny stuff... Hard to believe I joined this board in August of 04 as a newbie who had not even started my CDL training, coming up on 12 years now. Those early years were a learning and growing experience for me.. I can remember being involved in some of those heated arguments and not being smart enough to walk away.. Even though the board is not what it once was I still find myself coming back to check in every once in a while and it is nice to see familiar names still hanging around..
