    Default Driving Tax? WTF?

Driving tax gains favor as gas tax funds fall short - Yahoo! Finance

Democrats and Republicans might be able to unite on this one. lol A new tax? Are the people in Washington stark raving mad? [sarcasm]Smart too, instead of encouraging people to buy fuel efficient cars... [/sarcasm]

    Unbelievable.

Both sides make good points pro and con...........hmmmmmm, what side should I be on here? I dislike the possibility of big brother watching you. They say they can make it not happen but I don't buy that, they HAVE to be watching you in some way to get the mileage info correct. So I let a friend borrow my car, I'm going to be charged even though I wasn't the one in it because it's registered to me. Charge my friend not me for those miles driven.

They get real creative figuring ways to tax.

When are they going to get real creative cutting spending?

You can probably count on it.

I just love the way they're suggesting that they figure the tax by using GPS data. So like a trucker's paperless log. So now when I'm off work and home my trips to the grocery store need to be logged? Crazy.

"They say" that it "could" replace gas tax. When you have an organization that stays awake nights trying to figure out how to raise more funds, what do you think the chances are that it will "replace" gas tax? As usual, they're demonstrating a lack of grasp of reality... And, the American People become the victims. Money is already in short supply when it comes to keeping the economy going, and they're going to find a way to take a bigger bite out of it.

Down here where I live now, there are quite a number of people that have given up the automobile in favor of a bicycle that does not cost gas, has no ever-rising insurance premiums, and you don't need to spend $80/year on registration. And, a "back-yard" mechanic can still work on them. The only thing they'll do with a "driving tax" is drive more people away from cars and onto bicycles. Even now, you don't have to worry much about someone stealing your car (in spite of "BAIT CAR" on TV). But, bicycles that are not chained to something are quickly stolen, and even those that are chained and locked get stolen. Some carry hacksaw blades inside the legs of their pants.

Somebody want to let them know they're butting heads with the LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS?

That's the funny part. The more they mess with the driving public, the less "tax" revenues they bring in. They are creating all of the "Hybrids", Electric cars, all of this = less fuel usage=less tax collection=stupidity.

Well, if they start taxing the miles I put on with my bicycle, I can always switch to rollerskates.

I don't think you fully understand. At my age, I have to have 2 pair of skates at the same time. One pair for me to wear, and one pair for my "walker" to wear. Or is that 2 pair for my walker... I forget...

But, if you think about it, the government currently gets it's funding from the gas tax. In CA, electric cars are gaining in popularity, and while they do use the roads, they do not use gas. So, how you gonna collect the road use tax from them? You can't very well add the road use tax onto the household electric bill. If you tack it onto the cost of registration, it's not going to be fair to the little old lady that just goes around the block to go to church and the grocery store, while the over-the-road salesman puts on 1500 miles a week and pays the same amount for registration. Seems that gas is going obsolete, so the only real way to do it is to meter the miles. And, since motorcycles only have two wheels, (theoretically) they only do half the damage to the road. They should only pay half the tax. (Of course, 3-wheeled motorcycles pay 3/4 of the tax)
